Can you just do the whole stud-finder bit to set up a wall mount swing arm? I just successfully used a new stud-finder to mount some bicycle hangers in my garage, so I'm pretty confident the one I have works. But screwing up the garage wall and screwing up my home office wall are two very different things.
Drill a small pilot hole if you are concerned. If the drill pulls out wood you should be good. I normally trust stud finders but like to start from different places to zero. A new 40" TV should not weigh much.

These also work well in a pinch. There are different sizes and will tell you the weight they hold.

Just had a chat with my brother in FL who does this stuff all the time. He suggested I find a nice piece of 3/4" plywood (which I have plenty of) and use that as a base for the mount. Easier to mount the plywood to the wall securely and then mount the swing arm to that.

Me and like 10 others just got placed on [paid] quarantine for 2 wks due to close contact with a positive coworker.

Besides studying, I'm gonna hit some of those LA canyon roads.

Definitely a safe suggestion but it's overkill and ugly. How much does the TV weigh? I expect it is light.

True. And he did mention that butterfly bolts would be entirely sufficient for a 32" TV if I got at least some of the mount into a stud and used butterfly bolts for the rest.

That said, I do have a swivel base and I can scoot the bookcase out away from the wall a bit, so I may not need a wall mount at all, which would be ideal. It's not like I plan on watching a lot of TV there. Just the occasional show.

The panels are so flat now that the load they put on a wall is closer to vertical than horizontal. Put that puppy on the wall and don't look back! I have 5 wall mounted in my house including a 83" that were all DIY.

If you can get to the other side of the wall, cut into the wall and use right angle brackets to secure the 3/4 plywood ( In my case I used a short piece of 2"X12") to the studs. Then close the hole, repair it, and now you can mount the TV where you want it.

My previous job involved setting up offices once the fiber was terminated. These were(/still are) some of the most used items for me. These two things are invaluable for hanging TV's/large monitors.

Best stud finder ever made - https://www.amazon.com/CH-Hanson-030...6180158&sr=8-4

Toggles - https://www.amazon.com/TOGGLER-SNAPT...6180206&sr=8-6

Between these two, you can slap a TV/Monitor anywhere you want.

Yeah, that's what I meant in my other post above when I referred to butterfly bolts. Toggle bolts is the proper term, I see.

The house has never looked better. Many small projects that had been put off are now completed. Zipping through my book library.

This is the stud finder I trust the most. Even my expensive one is still wrong every now and then (mostly around electricity) although it is nice that it can detect a current behind the drywall to avoid any dangerous drilling.

Currently: reading on the specs of electric toothbrushes. Anyone use the Oral B Pro 6000?

Edit: Ordered it, but let me know if you like/hate yours

Same here. I've got 3 high dollar stud finders. Oddly enough, the most basic and cheapest is the best all around in this instance.

I have the Philips Sonicare toothbrush Diamond series. It was around $200 when I got it.

But I had also just had porcelain veneers done, so that was what the aesthetic dentist recommended.

With what I paid for the veneers, I didn't want to skimp out on the toothbrush. It's been great though.

I've been using the Oral B 1000 for a few years now. No complaints. My dentist often comments that I must be flossing regularly (I don't) because my gums are tougher now. It does a great job cutting down the plaque as well.

We spent a few hours a day and a lot of time this past weekend to do hardwood floors for the second story. Lots of work but worth it and a good way to pass the time as well as staying active.

Not sure but reviews seemed great. I ordered a set of 2 from Costco this past weekend for $100. Been using Sonicare last 4-5 years and it’s dying on me (barely holds a charge for a 4-5 mins brushing). Decided to switch to circular brushes and I think they are more effective and better for the teeth and gum.

I've had quite a few Sonicare toothbrushes & the first model they made lasted the longest. The other 2 have been crap so after this one bites the dust I will have to look into the Oral B.

Also bought a 16-port switch to clear up the birds nest of smaller switches and cabling in my office. I have a nice shelf unit coming from Home Depot this week to mount everything on. I figure if this is going to be my place of occupation for a few months or more, it needs to be up to snuff.
Thanks for two reminders. My ~15 year-old rats nest of AV and data cables has been getting on my nerves for a while now. It's probably too much to hope for that Amazon has a pile of super-short patch cables in stock right now.

The second reminder is that I volunteered for a municipal committee, and our first meeting is next week via an as-of-yet undisclosed online meeting system. I have to make at least a half-hearted effort to present a residential-looking background for my computer's camera.

They were kind enough to send me 20+ files, each with hundreds of pages of conflicting municipal, county, and state goals for homework and background reading before the first meeting. Guess I know what I'll be doing for the upcoming 4-day holiday weekend......

Really could use a new desk. Not easy at this point getting rid of the old one, though.
