My understanding is there is a small (7 hp) electric motor in the rear that assists in start up as well as torque fill when needed. Could certainly be wrong.

The engine has a multifunction high-voltage generator/motor that does a handful of jobs: torque infill, top-end power boost, starting and charging. See pg 11 on http://www.rotory.com/bmw/I8.pdf

Helps reduce turbo lag as well I believe. Potentially this 'little' motor is the most complicated thing (and probably the biggest innovation) in the the i8 due to the number of functions it performs!

Quite interesting that even the boost is delivered via belt drive. But then again, a number of motorcycles have been using a belt final drive quite successfully.

Needs to be bigger, quite a lot of lag in higher gears.
