Is Coding My 2016 i3 Rex A Good Idea For Daily Commutes?

Hi Guys,

I would like some advice before I execute on an idea. I recently moved out of a house to an apartment until my new home is being built. This has put me in a five-month temporary position of not being able to charge my i3. I am also working from home but soon I will have to start my daily 62-mile round trips and there are no charging stations at my job. There are two charging stations within 10 miles of my apartment. The charging stations are somewhat slow, and it takes about 5 hours to fully charge my car.

I’m think about coding my i3 to have the REX hold at 75 percent option. I think this would solve my daily use problem. How much stress would this put on the REX as I am sure it was not designed for daily use?

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to code HSOC and increase fuel tank. Running the REx daily shouldn’t hurt anything long term. In my 2015 REx it gets used 3-4 times a month.

Shouldn't be any issue using the REx daily for 5 months. I'd do an oil change now, before you start, and another at the end.

It's going to be an annoying 5 months-- you're going to need gas pretty much every day.

Very true. I've owned the car for 13 months and I've only put in four gallons of gas.

The good thing about programming HSOC is you’ll make it home with a decent SOC. I try not to keep my EV’s at a low SOC for an extended period. It’s too bad you can’t even use the wall charger at work. Suppose it’s only for a few months.

Thanks BL5 and Obioban. I downloaded the Bimmercode app and ordered a Veepeak OBD adapter. I should be coding this week.

Maybe your place of work has an outdoor power outlet you can plug your Level 1 charger into. On a 110v outlet you probably won't get a full charge in 8 hours but it would reduce the need to run the REx. Tell them it's temporary and a pollution-reduction thing.

Just finished coding REx hold, fuel capacity increase, and set ECO Pro as default with Bimmercode app. In the process, I found that I had left the 110V charging setting to max (bonehead move on my part). I changed the 110V charging setting to low and i3 is accepting a charge in my garage. It's super slow but adds options.

Thanks to all.

Shouldn't be a problem. I used to have to use my REx everyday on my old '15. Fillled it up every few days.

I drive about 90 miles each way about 5 days a week I coded to use the real gage on the tank plus I wanted the car to do other things personalized to my like, I do gas once every day charge at night and once on the way back, so do it I will say works for me, I did pay a lot I believe but I didn't know any better back then I took it to a place and a guy did it can't complain

which Veepeak adapter did you buy? There are a few options on Amazon.

I have one similar to that (ELM327, but it does not connect to my i3).

Does your apartment have an electric clothes dryer or an electric oven?

Have you tried Medium? It would be a bit faster than "Low".

Thx for this...although I got one and am returning it...didn't work with my phone or my wifes (both Android). Blue light never came on. Would indicated paired and connected, and then immediately disconnect. Neither Carly or Protool could see the adapter. Going to have to figure out another option, I guess.

Map HSOC to one of the preset buttons so you can easily turn on the REX.
