This whole mess seems predictable and has turned from a "nice to have" to a "meh" just like ChargePoint. Happy to use their L2 options, happy to have the HPDC options as well but in most cases not my first choice and becoming less relevant as more HPDC sites open up. Keeping in mind that not all v3 SC sites will be open to all vehicles.

So my employer just approved my permanent relocation from my current high tax state to an even higher tax state on the opposite coast (MD to SoCal). I'll probably be making the move at the end of this year.
I haven't decided whether to ship both my 2023 iX and Tesla Y or perhaps take one of them on a cross country road trip. Lots of factors to consider, among them charging. On one hand, my iX is under the 30 minutes free EA for 2 years plan until the end of December. On the other hand the Tesla should be significantly easier to find charging for. My iX is much quieter and more comfortable on the highway, but the ADAS is not hands free. My Tesla has the hands-free FSD, but I haven't tested it yet on multi-hour drives to see if the experience is substantially better on interstates. For cargo capacity I'm going to say it's a wash, since it's just 2 of us, and for either vehicle we'll have the rear seats folded down to transport the most stuff. For those that have done this drive in any EV, any good recommendations for charging spots (either standalone or at/near a hotel)? |

lol I would do the Tesla
Ease of mind is priceless I have driven Tesla for much longer road trips than IX. Totally different experience regarding the anxiety level. |

I drove my car from Boca raton to a little north of NYC, over 1200 miles. Very easy but then again there were multiple chargers everywhere.
I stayed at hotels that had level 2 EVSE so the battery was full in the morning. Just depends on route and the number of DCFC’s, I know in certain parts of the country not so great, Just have a plan and then plan B. Use a better route planner and then check those chargers in PlugShare to see their rating. Good luck, I am sure Tesla would be a bit less stress but the IX is so comfortable my 1200 mile trip was no stress. Last edited by Kennethjk; 10-05-2024 at 08:48 AM.. |

I would take the iX in a heartbeat. Drive the southern route and find hotels with L2 chargers to avoid a stop each day and reset any limits you may have DC charging. There are plenty of EA sites along the way and you will need a few EVgo stops. The iX is more comfortable for that drive and while more charging stations are needed, it’s much better than even a couple of years ago.

As a follow up to my earlier post my only real stress would have been if that I did run into a problem my co-pilot (my wife) would have mentioned a few “I told you so’s”.
That was my greatest fear, more than broken chargers, LOL |

EA charging in Southern CA is a complete and total shit show. I pity the people who have to charge there. It's an unnerving experience to say the least and every hour of every day is "rush hour". Total armpit.

1. Frisco - the one time I was there, 4 chargers, 2 were down, the other 2 occupied. 2. Lakewood/Golden @ Colorado Mills - 8 (I think) chargers. First 2 I tried didn't work. Third one worked. EA is the pits.

No brainer…take the Model Y. IX is a far better drive but EA remains unreliable and other CCSA options can be hit or miss. My last two charge attempts at EA had problems. In both instances (Wichita and Topeka) I was only able to charge at 40 kWh…restricted by hot charging cables. In both instances I also experienced errors at a different charger…same location. When driving Teslas I never had a charger issue.

I went from MN to SC and back over the last month. Two different routes thanks to Helene taking out I40. Zero issues with EA which surprised me. Their older chargers do not always deliver the full capability of the iX. I was at one location with the new chargers and they were great.
Each location with dead units was noted in the app. Biggest issue was BMWs NAV and computer which undercharged the iX twice so that the iX was barking for a charge. I now do my own calculations. I did have issues with some Circle K chargers and a hotel charger that only put out 6KW which is really slow. Overall rather pleased how well the trips went and how well the iX drives on long roadtrips. |

As with anything, you’ll likely find the biggest complainers on forums such as this. It’s what it’s for.
If you have a smidge of patience, you’ll be fine. And sure, your wife may say ‘I told you so’ once. But that will happen regardless.

Yeah I'd argue it really depends on how long of a trip you're making it. If you have the time to take it slow and find some sights, the iX I think would be fine if you find places you can charge overnight and that mitigates issues with fast chargers. If you're just trying to book it across the country, maybe not as fun. I'm sure there's plenty of sights to see in Appalachia and up until you cross the Mississippi. Might get a little more dubious once you get past east TX/OK depending on route, but once you get near the mountains of NM it gets fun again.

Good to know, I have only used the ones at Glenwood Springs and the ones at the Walmart at Lafayette. Both were rebuild on the last 6-8 months, so work ok, BUT they tend to be crowded during normal hours. (a year ago they were not). With all the EVs hitting the road they urgently need to build up the network (repeating the obvious !)

If you picture the country as lying prone, with the head at the East coast and the feet in CA, there is a charging desert just about the waist, top to bottom (except for Tesla chargers). Once you get past the belt line either way, you're good.
