Summer Tires vs All-season on i4 M50

My plan is to swap out the original Hankook summer tires (245/40R19 98Y & 255/40R19 100Y) that came with my 2023 i4 M50 with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. I have a heavy foot and the Hankook's just aren't holding the corners well enough.

My plan is to stick with summer tires because, as I understand it, all-seasons would cut the range. Is that true and, if yes, by what percentage approx?

There may not be a perfect answer your question.

Nevertheless, here is another perspective to consider.

EVs generate instant torque which in turn generates more tire wear due to the added force. Also - extra weight also accelerates tire wear.

Instant torque is very gratifying. As one gets used to the instant torque, the driving style will inevitably change.

The same tires on an EV will wear out faster vs on the iCE vehicle.

Summer tires on an EV will wear our faster again.

The question which is very difficult to answer in the view of many other variables such as driving style changes: what will be the rolling resistance of the tire as the tread wears off.

Humbly speaking, get the tires you want and just enjoy the car.

Same debate here. I’m leaning towards the same summer tires as you are. Pirelli run flats are also an option.

I find the 19” Hankooks adequate, if you don’t, you’ll for sure hate all season tires.

Trying to figure the range penalty of changing tires.... Thinking pirelli cinturato is the way to go but tempted to get an ev specific tire, however very limited in sizing for 18" rims.

As a category, summer tires in general have higher rolling resistance than all-season tires.

But…lots of variation within the summer category, and … the most performance-oriented all-season tires also in general have high rolling resistance.

I was going to use the Consumer Reports results for the Pilot Sport All Season 4 vs the Pilot Sport 4s, but the all-season version actually had higher rolling resistance than the summer version! And a couple summer models in the Consumer Reports ratings had good rolling resistance. This must explain how BMW can keep the same EPA EV range rating regardless of whether the i4 is equipped with summer vs all-season.

Tire Rack no longer seems to be testing rolling resistance, but here are some comparisons translated into EV range:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=298
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=299

I have the tested Michelin CrossClimate2 on my Audi A6 Allroad, and definitely noticed the mileage hit in my records after swapping out the OEM tires (which like most OEM tires is a generally inoffensive all-season OEM-only model optimized for ride comfort, noise, and EPA mpg ratings).

I will eventually replace the OEM all-season 19” tires on my i4 M50 with the Vredestein Quatrac Pro, which will inevitably entail some sort of range hit. Although not as bad as running separate winter tires from November into April.

Some European tests include rolling resistance. Here’s an interesting example within the Michelin line:

Now of course, all these tests are new full-tread tires. I suppose the case could be made (as another posted noted) that summer tires wear down so quickly that the rolling resistance will soon become better. But that also means the tire needs to be replaced sooner with a new full-tread tire.

I think the bottomline is that if you value range, then summer vs all-season doesn’t matter much (except for wear rate of course), but stick with a BMW OEM model, or some other EV-specific model, or some other model that you find through research has low rolling resistance.

My M50 came with 19" Pzero summer tires. Barely got over 8000 miles on them. Decided to try the Goodyear Eagle Sports (German made), and have been very happy with them. They do feel a little more squishy (partially because of the new tread depth), but they almost feel smoother, and still grip surprisingly well. I did my Dragy tests before and after changing them, and they seem to be within very similar in the 0-60 times, suggesting grip is more than adequate.
Definitely let out a little chirp when you launch it, or snap the throttle, but then they dig in pretty impressively. Prices are pretty much identical, but the Goodyears come with a 25000 mile tread wear warranty.

I have 20” Goodyear Eagle Exhilarates on my X4. Thank you for reminding me to look at that line for my i4. The trends definitely don’t wear down fast

I take it the Pilot Sports are EV rated otherwise you void your warranty, at least this is the case in the UK so I am told.

Ordered i4 xdrive40 and will replace with MP4-AS once Michelin restarts their rebate program.
