Inspection sticker removal
Any tips on removing the interior windshield inspection sticker? My state doesn’t require one, but I don’t want to damage the glass or fabric dashboard.

Normal glass cleaners will usually remove stickers, but straight 70% isopropyl alcohol will as well (one of the usual ingredients in glass cleaner). It won't damage the glass, but don't let it drip on upholstery. Patience is the key.

Just a word of caution with glass cleaners and cars of any type. Some glass cleaners contain ammonia which will cause crazing in most plastics (polymers) like acrylic or polycarbonate. Over time, crazing will make the plastic will look faded and the plastic may become brittle. It's best to avoid any cleaner that contains ammonia. Sprayway makes a good glass cleaner that doesn't have ammonia in it but for the purpose of removing sticker residue on the windshield, isopropyl alcohol on a clean towel or cloth will do the trick.

A trick I use to remove the sticky residue left over from stickers is to use a piece of packaging tape and quickly tap with the sticky side of the tape against the leftover sticky residue on the glass. The residue will transfer over to the tape little by little. Keep using fresh pieces of tape and tapping until everything is removed. Make sure to stick a piece of tape to the glass and pull fast to get the best results. This trick works on other surfaces, not only glass.

A trick I've used for a while and always works is 1) take off as much of the sticker as you can with a non-aggressive tool or your fingers. 2) soak a paper towel sheet and then "slap" it onto the glass where the sticker is affixed. Wait about 10 mins, and then the rest of the residue/sticker will easily roll off. This technique is a little messy and wet, but it doesn't require anything besides water and a piece of paper towel.

Do I need to worry about damaging the laminated comfort glass with the razor blade? Plan on covering the dash with microfiber, scraping off sticker, then cleaning residue with ammonia free glass cleaner

Use the trick I mentioned that requires no razor blade.

You can damage your glass with a razor blade - Mohs hardness, glass = 5.5 - 6.5, Mohs hardness, tempered steel = 6 - 7. A plastic trim tool or brass scraper are safer. But as others note, just soaking the sticker and peeling it off works just fine, being careful to protect your upholstery.

I’ve been using a scrapper to remove the sticker for decades, never noticed a problem and I am sure the inspection stations do the same
They aren’t wasting time soaking anything |

True but the point is I have never noticed any damage even from newer cars
If you own the car and are meticulous then I get it Most of my BMWs are leased and although I treat them as I own them the inspection or registration stickers is not one of my concerns Now getting my EA certificate for plug and charge and my wife’s phone not going to guest profile , that would be nice |

https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics...%20is%20formed. Windshield glass is comparatively soft, but still pretty tough so you have to really try to damage it, although as above, using a scraper or tool harder than the glass can scratch the surface (including random dust on the surface that can include microscopic particles of quartz or silica which may be harder than the glass). Minimize abrading the surface with anything harder than clean microfiber and you'll be good. |
