Thanks to everyone at Bimmerpost who is involved in bringing us these near real time images and videos of the i8 unveil and this year's IAA show.

Car is gorgeous.

And since no one has apparently mentioned this in any of the i8 threads, thank < insert your favorite deity here > that the hood line flows with the car!!!!!

I would like to know how they got around the crumple zone thing, carbon fiber loophole? Eco loophole?

As someone who is in the market for a sports car in this price range, I want to be interested in this i8 car but cannot somehow bring myself to be. Perhaps its the quirky design or the unconventional powerplant. Maybe give me another 10 years to accept this. Maybe BMW are way too ahead of things. It's very polarising.

I am, however, very interested in the upcoming offer from Benz - the SLC (or mini-SLS). I really wish BMW would make something like this for now.

There are several carbon tub cars out there, what they do is use the tub for integrity and then there are aluminum components that attach to the tub where the power train and suspension are mounted. Those components are made to crumple like in a regular car. No car has a design intended to have passenger space intrusion although under federal safety requirements some passenger space intrusion is acceptable. The idea is the crumpling takes place to absorb the energy as far away from the passengers as possible. Hope this helps

I thought the hood line thing was due to pedestrian safety regulations, or do you mean pedestrian when you say passenger?

I have no clue how they got past it. My first guess would be they threw more money at it? That, or the model was patented/registered/whatever I.e. grandfathered in before the regulations took place

The hood is a seperate issue related to pedestrian. Your question was where are the crumple zones which is the question I answered. This car will likely be far more safe then most because of its design and in 10 years most will have carbon tubs like it. If you want to see some great photos of this type of design look up the McLaren MP4-12C they have some photos out there of the car without body panels, it will show you what I am talking about.

I'm confused. I mentioned the hood line not being ugly as with some other recent models.

Nebraska replied to my post and asked how they got past the crumple zone thing, which I assume he was referring to the lack of the ugly hood line which has been linked to pedestrian safety regulations.

What exactly are you referring to, then, in this context, pruettfan?

Sorry, I thought the question came from the 330 guy who asked about the crumple zone.

Yes, we are talking about the same guy. Actually besides us and Jason who started the thread, I think he's the only other guy in here at the moment (ok that's an exaggeration, there are a few others in here too)

I was interested in the info you provided btw, as the safety of CFRP and how it crumples in order to protect the car's occupants certainly is interesting. I very much like the MP4-12C and thus will search out the videos you were referring to.

But the discussion at hand was about the hood line of the i8. If you look at the 4-Series, or the new X5, you'll see an unsightly straight line where the hood is cut several inches above the kidney grille.

In contrast the i8 does not have this unsightly line, but rather a hood that follows the shape of the top of the kidney grilles.

The general consensus on this forum regarding this unwanted design element has been that regulations for pedestrian safety (so when you take out that grandmother crossing the street, you don't break her legs) and if that's the case, the i8 seems to be the only exception in terms of a newly introduced model, so we were wondering how and why that could be.

Why are the aerodynamics so average? With such a low profile and a design focused on efficiency, you would expect a better drag coefficient than 0.26, which is worse than a Prius III (0.25) or an E-Class Coupé (0.24).

Don't expect a logical answer to this over here in this forum. I have asked the same a few times with no response. Everyone just says that the new hood line is due to the EU regulations regarding pedestrian safety, which explains the ugly cut lines in the new BMWs. But no one can explain why VW, Audi, etc. do not follow these regulations! I would like someone to technically explain how the new hood line is better for pedestrian safety.
