Buy or Lease?

I too have leased our last few cars. I have an X3d, and 328D and an i3 REX. All leased. Our lease on the 328D is coming up. When we leased it, my wife was doing lots of hiway driving, and it was a perfect choise. Right now, we don't need that, and the X3d will fill that need. I am considering buying a cpo i3--I only need a city car, and moving the i3REX up to my wife. So it seems like $18k for the CPO vs $392/mo for a new i3(less $69/mo for mass incentive) might be a good deal. I would also expect to operate the i3 bev/cpo for many years to come, so its almost break even for me. I would always expect the i3 to be worth 5-10K$, so the 3 year cost of BEV might be less than a lease. I really don't care about more range, as my daily commute is really only about 10 steps, and I work on an island, so 10 miles takes me from one end to the other. I went 44 days last summer with one charge on the battery. So for my forseeable needs, cpo might be the way to go.

For me, I also support science and have lots of $$ invested in a private observatory, so want to save some of my money for that purpose. Love driving BMW, but its not my passion. If it were, I would be driving an i8 or Tesla.

For the OP, you may be on to something. While most the comments about leasing are appropriate for many, there are cpo purchases that may make as much sense for the buyer and his needs.

Thought I chime in since I too faced this same choice this past weekend. I currently own a E60 M5 and my wife drives acura RDX. My commute sucked since I'd always hit major traffic on the 405. My commute was only 17 miles but it would sometimes take over 1hr half to get home. I thought about leasing a brand new i3 vs buying one. Currently there are no really great deals on the i3 either put a large sum $$ down payment to have low monthly payments or expect to pay $500 + vicinity. I went to my local BMW dealership to check out couple used ones. I ended up buying a CPO 2015 i3 with a bunch of options with roughly 17k miles on the odometer. 19k out the door. My monthly payments are as much as I pay in gas on the M5 for one month. Now my wife can also use the i3 on the weekends running errands saving her on having to drive her RDX.

White i3 here, my car payment is less than what I'm saving on gas with my F80 M3. See you on the 405! Did you get the carpool stickers?

Same predicament...

My current DD is 2011 M3 and with MPG is about 17-19. Starting in August, will be driving 300 miles weekly. In gas alone, I'm staring at $220/month increase. So, I'm looking at i3's right now for my commute.

First thought about looking at CPO as prices are in the $15-18k (Plus fees) range and originally thought that would be a better way to go. Drive it for 3 years and sell it and get a newer i3/EV then. BUT, like others has mentioned that the tech is changing too rapidly like iPhones/Computers. So who knows what a 6 year old i3 with 60k miles would be worth. $6k...$3k... or nothing. The depreciation may be much higher then a 3 year lease would cost.

So, I'm looking at leasing one instead. my $.02 worth.

Same here. 400 miles a week in an F80 M3. The i3 is a godsend. Another plus with a new i3 is the 2 years free charing, which is a crap shoot with a CPO. You will only be able to take advantage if the previous owner did not.
