Haldex can only send 50% to the rear, and if they used the Focus RS setup, it can briefly overdrive the rear to 60%. That's the same as a quattro or xDrive car before slip.
It sounds like you're saying that the xdrive or Quattro in a RWD-based vehicle (e.g. Audi RS4 or BMW M3/M5) is the same as the Haldex in a FWD-based on (Golf R)…

Maybe I misunderstood your statement?
Nope. Haldex is 100% fwd until there is slip, and then it's limited to 50% max to the rear. A rwd based BMW runs 60% to the rear with no slip and can send 100% to the rear under slip.
Ah that clarified your original statement to me. Cheers!!

Umm, a Golf R is half the price and has 50% less motor, this isn't surprising. More expensive, more powerful cars tend to be faster. News at 11.

And did you just compare a stage 2 car to a stock one? A stage 2 Mk7 Golf R 1/4 mile is around 11.5s but only traps in the low teens, they're in the low 13s range for 0-130. Of course a modified S55 is going to be quicker. The Mk8 will be a little faster than the Mk7, the new Conti turbo is better than the old IS38, but it's still not going to be approaching an S55 or S58 unless it's running over 30psi.

I had a Mk5 GTI for a few years, it was a great little car (mine was an 09, so it had the TSI found in the later generations). Wouldn't mind picking up a Mk6/7 at some point, as from what I've heard the interiors were much improved over the Mk5. I'd probably go for an R though, because traction in 1st and 2nd can be an issue in the GTI lol. I'm sure the Mk8 is even more comfortable and quiet, but the little details especially inside seem to be a massive swing-and-a-miss. Also the styling is just sooooo bland...the Mk8 R looks like what the Mk8 GTI should have looked like. Still, it might be the last German hot hatch we get with a manual, as I believe Europe is DSG-only for almost every VW performance vehicle now.

It has been messy, but how often do car companies publicly fix something.
I will take it as a good thing, anyone ordering new cars will get the new HW/SW.

Bump. Not an R but same shit.

The first six minutes are hilarious. All hail Mk7.

None of this; the MMI, the capacitive buttons and non-buttons, the hood prop instead of a strut, El Cheapo interior, etc.; none of it would've been green-lit if Piech were still alive, I'm sure.

VAG has done some very questionable things in the past, but all of this crap, packaged into their number one car, is the opposite of what I know VW for.

And BMW is copying many of these errors with iDrive 8 unfortunately.

Farah's review above his tragically hilarious but spot-on.

I love my '19 Mk7.5 R. Fantastic daily and complement to my M2c. The Mk8? Zero interest.

I'm actually surprised at how mentally slow they are when it comes to using this system. Zach is typically on tech too. Regardless, there are plenty of videos out there showing how the UI is actually very simple to use when you understand all of the shortcuts at play, from owners and reviewers. They're not hidden, you just need to do literal basic research.

I finally got to sit in a Lapiz Blue R w/ DSG yesterday. It was fucking special. My next car for sure. Within five minutes, I was able to customize the home screens, the shortcuts, and the equalizer to my liking. Everything's customizable. You can fully disable all traction systems in less time than it would take to hold down a traditional button (which is typically around 5+ secs on most cars).

The MK7 is great, but it's also the most generic car in the world. Definitely for guys that wouldn't dare go beyond missionary in the bedroom. At least the MK8 is the first car since the MK5 to take some semblance of risk in interior and exterior design.

My next car for sure. Just waiting and calling dealers that aren't trying to blast my cornhole with markups.

How do you disable the traction control faster than by using a physical button?

Time notwithstanding, you've got to take your eyes off the road more when using any kind of touch screen than, say, physical buttons which you can memorise very easily. Like blindly typing text messages on a Nokia 3210.

Customisable yes, it is, does it help your overall interaction with the vehicle, I don't think so. But this is not a VW-only problem anyway.

MMI aside, though, the fact that, 1. the fucking HVAC controls aren't back-lit, 2. I kept turning the steering wheel hearing on with my right hand, 3. there is an apparent cost-cutting mayhem in VW interiors, is enough for me to scratch my head and wonder where this all is going to end up one day.

It does drive great apparently (have driven a regular Golf) and I like the way it looks in GTI/R trim. You won't be disappointed. I wouldn't go ti the length of saying that Mk7 was bland. A Golf shall be "boring" to an extent, and shall not have any stupid mishaps on the inside.
