AMG V8 vs. M Division V8

Which is better in terms of reliability in your opinion?

I've owned several V-8 AMG's(see sig below) and never had a single issue with any.
I've had one V-8 BMW,2020 M550(yes,yes,I know not an actual M car)and had nothing but problems with it. So much so that I terminated the lease halfway through. I'll never have another 8cyl BMW. Shame because I love the low end grunt of the V8s

BMW S63 V8 engines are mainly based on N63 which are notorious for bad reliability. Later variations of N63 (TUs) and S63s are typically better than older generations of N63, but I would definitely pick AMG over S63 in terms of reliability. If you want a reliable BMW go with inline 6. The new S58 engine is a masterpiece.

Really no comparison. AMG/MB has done 10 fold more V8's than BMW. BMW's bread and butter is the straight 6.

I've owned a BMW E70 V8. I will never buy another V8 or V6 period.

I've owned a MB C32 AMG, 6 cylinder and I will never buy another MB.

If you are keeping the vehicle for less than 5 years then, I would buy the brand you prefer.

If you plan to keep beyond the warranty, I would read up on the BMW N63 issues, there are many and the MB AMG head bolt issue. I don't follow MB anymore so not sure if this was ever resolved in future engine designs.

It doesn't SOUND awesome!

V8, V10 and V12s all give real men a boner when revved! I-6 engines just dont cut it, no matter how much power they make!

This is also why ICE will always be what real men prefer over a super fast Tesla.

Sound is a huge part of the driving experience! Anyone who doesn't agree is just driving to get from point A to point B.

In this case, you should stop driving your BMW M4 F82...

I agree, I love my 993, and it's got a Fister exhaust ( i love telling people that ) and it sounds pretty good, but not all Porsche make the right noise. The 911 Turbo S sounds like a blender. I'd still have one.

I will once I find a V8/V10 replacement....hopefully when prices return back to normal in the next couple of years.

For now, my F82 has mid pipe that makes it sound much better but nowhere near as good as it deserves!

I have an S58 with an Akrapovic midpipe and Akrapovic exhaust. It sounds pretty awesome.

AMG:

M156 head bolt failure and soft cam lobes
M278/M157 cylinder scuffing, valve guides and chain tensioner problems
M17x unexplained/unsolved misfires

For long term ownership I would not own any AMG V8 unless engine replacement is in your budget. Engine replacement is not guaranteed, but not unheard of.

I have yet to hear, in person, a turbocharged 911 that didn't sound like crap. Surely there are some good ones that have modified exhaust systems that sound great, I don't doubt a GT2 or GT2 RS sounds good in person. But what I've heard was really not good at all.

But as said, I'd still have one.

Agreed, the 911 to me sounds like a 1972 Beetle. A fast and attractive 1972 Beetle that I wouldn’t mind owning.

That is on my list to test drive!

I love the fact that it comes in manual with a hand built 6.2L supercharged V8.

Looks like started a debate lol. The thing I don't like about the S58 is that it uses S63 rods and there have been cases of them bending rods when tuned.

I have the same setup without the midpipe. It sounds good in sport+ but I do wish I got the midpipe for the full experience.

But, you can't deny BMW's V8 ability to propel a 4400 lb sedan through the 1/4 in 10 seconds at 130.

The only downside to the s58 so far is the batch of units that had thrust bearing recalls.

That motor has some serious potential and the best way to describe it is a fast high revving motor. My wife had a 22 LCI X3M Comp that she enjoyed driving due to power, but hated the suspension harshness and the sound. She basically called it a "German born rice burner". I about died laughing because honestly, she was right.

If still looking for a mid pipe I have the one Dinan recently released still brand new in box and never had a chance to install it before wife traded in her 22 LCI x3m comp.
