Creaking Noise from Left Side - ANYONE ELSE?!

So the i8 as we know is very tight put together & needs to be since it can get so quiet in the interior & something shaking around or creaking would drive you mad. Well I have had this issue since I got the car a couple weeks back now.

On the LEFT driver side whenever I go over even a small bump or dip something creaks / shakes behind / side me. I'm not sure yet what it is 100% but the right side does not do that at all nor does any other part of the car.

I'm going to take it to the dealer here & see if they can figure out what it is & fix it but wanted to see if anyone else had this issue as well or a similar one & was it fixed?

Its so annoying hearing this thing rattle around while driving & everything else is super quiet. I'm thinking maybe a part of the interior of the seatbelt mechanics or the door inside itself IDK.

Other then the creaking noise, how do you like the car? how does it compare to your r8?

Loving it so much honestly. It just feels & looks & preforms very amazingly.

The looks kill the r8

The interior kills the r8

The technology kills the r8

The initial take off speed pulls kill the r8 (even though the r8 would catch up & blast by probably)

The only thing I can say I really miss from the r8 & wish this had was more noise. That engine sound outside & some visible NORMAL pretty carbon fiber accents inside at least.

If this doesn't solve the problem, it's the motor mounts for which BMW does not yet have a solution.

Thanks! I'll show them this but it does not sound like the same issue I'm having I don't think. I had someone cram into the seat behind me ( LOLOLOL ) while I drive over bumps & stuff so they could put their ear to it & try to pinpoint where its coming from & they said it sounds like its coming out of the seat belt vent thing that the seatbelt pulls out of. Im still not sure though I mean it could be so many things.

I plan to wake up early & see what they can find / do though.

I had the same noise. The Service Bulletin work did not solve the problem. I thought it was the engine mounts but recently had a problem where the battery was removed and then put back in. The covers under the car were the re-fastened. News fasteners are required each time that happens. I no longer hear the binding and release sounds.

I only had the noise the MalibuBimmer described relative to the wheel lugs.

I have had the same clunk noise when leaving my driveway. I had it in for service and then did the two service bulletins and a the latest software upgrade. The software is supposed to fix a problem where the transmission will not go into gear. It also fixed my remote iphone app so it now receives updated information

I think I know what Hitz is talking about. I have the same thing. Sounds like body flex when going over bumps or going up a driveway at an angle. To me, it sounds like it's coming from the door catch. I'll point it out to service - who, incidentally, will pick up my car tomorrow because it's in transmission lockup for the second time.

Ugh. How long was it in the shop last time? Where are you located?

Switzerland, near Zurich. The last time, it took them two days to talk to BMW and one night to reload the sotware. That was it. The car had just forgotten what gear it was in and got confused. I trust it will be quicker this time.

Good luck. I asked about your location because in many of the United States we have strong Lemon Laws. In California (and many other places) it's 3 strikes and you're out (car is bought back or replaced at your option), Same is true if the car is in the shop for warranty repairs a total of 31 days or more during the initial warranty period.

I hope BMW fixes the amnesia for you this time permanently.

Yes I have that body flex issue as well. Whenever I pull up into or out of my driveway i can hear the sides creek & flex. But thats another thing in all.

This other issue I am having is literally non stop while I drive if I'm going over anything that's not 100% smooth. If the car goes over a bump or anything like that that gives the car a shake I hear a rattle noise come from the left side near the seat belt dispenser it sounds like a bolt or something is loose & is just jingling around in there IDK.

I drop it off tomorrow for them to check it out. They made me make an appointment & bring it back in & said they could not look at it the day I brought it by unless I left it there & found a ride home.

I just hope they find the issue. I have a feeling they are going to say "we don't hear anything" then I'm going to have to go up there & make them get in the car with me & go over some bumps so they have no choice but to hear it lol.

My cracking noise seems to have gotten fixed by readjusting the door lock.

Any more updates Hitz?

I test drove a Jan 2015 i8 for a few days, and told the dealership that I would take the car as long as they fixed the rattle in the left hand side. My issue sounds exactly like yours... sounds like it comes out of the little vent there.

I think they are finding it rather elusive at the moment. I will give them Malibu's advice with the fasteners though.

Cheers,
Scar

I got the new wheel bolts and that didn't fix my problem. Good luck.

Well took the car out for a nice long drive tonight...and ZERO rattles!!

Apparently it was all to do with the door latches. They kept adjusting them millimetre by millimetre until it was perfect. As a side benefit, the doors are much easier to close with them nearly able to close with just their own weight now.

So for those struggling with a rattle....ask your dealer to go right over the door latches.

Good luck

That's good to know! Yeah they sort of fixed mine...it's a lot better but it still does it & I can still hear it over hard bumps so I'll let them know it's most likely to door latch when I take it back. I have to take it back soon anyway because last time it was there fixing this issue they accidentally scratched the heck out of the leather in one of my seats so they are replacing the leather with a new set when the kit comes in from bmw. Also having them install these body painted side markers I ordered.
