Aye-Eight is correct. Tesla is good for straight line acceleration, but that's it. It induces range anxiety after a while. The i8 outperforms it at 0-100 as the Tesla batteries start to overheat. And the Tesla slides all over the place on curvy roads. How do I know? I've been behind many of them where I live (Santa Monica mountains). As for build quality, I assume you haven't been in an i8. It doesn't have a huge iPad in the center console nor is its build quality shoddy, like the Tesla. Hyundai's cheapest cars have better controls ergonomics and build quality than Tesla.

Aye-Eight and Malibubimmer both have valid points. Had an opportunity to exchange cars for a test-drive - my i8 with my friend's Tesla S P85D. The Tesla is definitely ludicrous when it comes to the 0-60 sprint which will put many super cars to shame. While I am glad to see Tesla leading the ev charge, I was disappointed again (surprised by the Tesla roadster's subpar coach quality I test drove - dash flexed and the interior material felt cheap) with the interior design and material quality of the Tesla. The interior appeals to the tech enthusiast when it comes to the dash and the large iPad Pro like center console. The rest of the interior looks like an afterthought with simplicity and cost reduction as priorities. When it comes to handling, it performs well as a four door family sedan doing straight line sprints. However, it is a far stretch to say it can keep up with many of BMW's four door sports sedans on winding roads. Even my excessively heavy Merc CL63, designed for highway cruising, does a better job carving lines on the track than the Tesla.
My friend, who still loves his Tesla and for what it represents (eco-conscious and evolutionary), ended up placing an order for an i8. In his opinion, the i8 fills his auto enthusiasts' gap that the Tesla seems to be missing. |

I know the guy who has the first Model S in Europe. Personal friends with Elon Musk. He's made me test one excessively because he thought I was going to make a mistake when I started talking about the i8. I've driven that thing up and down mountain passes. Scary. Punch doesn't make up for everything else. But - I will admit: they made the whole e propulsion thing an acceptable option, waking up the other car makers in the process. And their overnight software updates are pretty cool. Having to wait at a Supercharger for 2 hours plus for an 80% charge is not. You want to be completely eco-friendly and don't care much for speed over long distances? Take the train. I personally enjoy covering 500 miles in under 5 hours. |

A P85D, wanted to run with our group on our, 'spirited drive' which last anywhere from 75 to 150 miles on the backroads in, er, Mexico. The car acquits itself well in the straights but it's mass can be seen in switchbacks, decreasing radius turns, and transitions that require exiting from a relatively high speed turn into a braking zone. Now for the $64,000 question: could it go the distance without any drop off in performance? No. It cut back power and recycled multiple times. And this was in relatively cool weather. But that is ok. When I drive the M6 in hot weather, I have to lift and coast to keep the oil temp at a reasonable level. All cars have limitations. The P85 in all of it's iterations is a fantastic car but it is limited by weight, cooling issues in the high performance arena, built quality, and handling. And an important question that I ask myself when buying a car...any car is: Can I jump in it and drive 500, 750, 1000 miles without thinking about it? M6, yes. 328d, definitely. i8 been there, done that. I would be nervous in any of the P85 variants. Cheers-mk Back to our originally scheduled thread. Alpina does not have anything to do with this project.

Sounds like the ECU they got ahold of had an ALPINA MAP of sorts, thus the thread title. |

Alpina does not use the S63 but a modified version of the N63 in their B5 and B6 cars. Even if you succeeded in getting your hands on these remaps they would not work on the S63. The reference to Alpina is just an internet hoax.
