As an all out sports car, it is not a 911, 458 conquerer. But as a wonderful, adept combination of comfort, superb driving dynamics and excitement, it is an amazing accomplishment. My enthusiasm for it is so intense, I ordered one with delivery due in May.
When did you order? I'm assuming sometime last year?

Had 911 turbo, turbo S, aston v12 vantage and came to the same conclusions as you. I8 in my garage and feeling very positive about life!

The form following function approach was executed in such a manner as to create a car of unparalleled visual appeal. As for the driving dynamics, I have become a huge fan of performance cars utilizing hybrid technology.it represents the best of both worlds- gobs of torque with the electric motor providing instant acceleration with a hand off to a turbo gas engine taking over to continue to propel the car in its area of strength. The i8 executes this methodology efficiently and brilliantly. At its selling price, it is unrealistic to expect LaFerrari, 918, P1 performance, it is a marvel. But for a fraction of the price, it provides a true taste of what those hyper cars deliver.

I ordered in December 2014. One dealer advised that it would be 12-18 months to get delivery. I then went to a dealer where I have purchased 2 XKRs who is also a BMW i8 dealer. Originally he said Sept. Then an allocation for March build became available due to cancellation and knowing I really wanted it in Spring, gave it to me.

And yes, I'd lap your R8 GT in my Lotus too You have a big mouth...and a foul one....nothing more.

R8 GT.... a car bought by wannabe Lambo owners, who can't afford one

You're all talk

Want proof? Here you go.... MUCH faster cars than your family saloon, and also your "wannabe Lambo" R8 on track with me in my Lotus:

Chill out dudes, in fairness to Tonymiabmw this thread was merged from one in the M3/4 section so pretty certain his comments came from seeing it there.

i8 & M3 very different cars and both top of their game right now.

Good to see that we have plenty of i8 owners now that have driven or own other sports car, or GTs....the i8 is truly different and exciting, and for the people who really understand what the car is about, there is no comparison to an M car, or a Tesla, or or or or....

It is unique and finally something from BMW that is different and not another M car, or another M performance offering that is just not that exciting to the BMW (M) enthusiast IMHO.

A) which cars ever make the OEM claimed numbers in "real life"? B) how close you get depends on what your real life looks like. C) I got my i8 a little over two months ago, and I'm doing quite well: 3.9 l/100km on average, which translates to over 72 mpg. My daily commute is about 2.3-2.4l/100km, over 120 mpg.

Impressive

btw, if anyone has got the Awards Edition of Top Gear magazine, they will see that long term results on the SAME car that Clarkson drove has given them 45mpg and even their small fuel tank car "will happily do 350 miles" in their words.

Well worth buying that edition. Nice write up

Oh, and the i8 is Top Gear magazine's OVERALL CAR OF THE YEAR 2014

I made the terrible terrible mistake of posting something like this on the tesla forums on an i8 vs tesla thread. I own a tesla roadster and was contemplating a p85d. But after the insane responses there I think I'm turned off from buying one.

I am so glad to see many i8 owners are experiencing the car the same way as I am, as something completely different from the pure electric or pure performance axis. I still don't think I fully understand it's dynamics yet....

I test drove the P85D. Pretty good car, apart from the finish quality and lack of rear headroom. Incredible acceleration off the mark

Not in any way comparable to the i8 though, and I fail to see any logic in threads comparing Tesla S cars with i8.

It allows Tesla owners to troll.

Who gives a shit if you can baby a throttle, follow 18 wheelers, turn off all electrical and a/c and avoid hills for 800 miles between fillups. That's not a fun way to drive, even if it nets you higher MPGs.

As it stands, current MPG ratings are almost entirely pointless.
I agree in part, as far as you have open roads and can actually let loose.

Reality, however, is that most of us spend the majority of our motoring hours with imposed limits, on crowded roads, going through cities with moms and baby strollers crossing the roads.

And suddenly, mileage becomes the only meaningful thing to strive for. Because there is no point in big brabbly engines, wheel-spinning acceleration, and high-speed road holding. No fun there.

Once you do get a chance to enjoy your car, though, I'm with you. And that's the beauty of the i8. It can do both. Which other car can?

Gas mileage is going to become more important as manufacturers meet future CAFE standards. Hybrids are currently the best way to do that for companies such as Ferrari and Porsche, hency their very expensive hybrids which, presumably, will lead to less expensive hybrids over the next decade.

Fun video. The Lotus is properly quick, obviously, and you seem to drive it quite well. But to be honest, looking at the lines, most of the people you passed couldn't drive if their lives depended on it.

I suspect the guys who bought the early laptops and didn't wait for the mass market to catch on are the ones who started eBay, Amazon, Google, ... heck, even Tesla.

If you're waiting for a perfected product, you'll find yourself in the middle of the bell curve. That's fine, of course. But some of us get a kick out of being ahead of that curve, even if it comes at the price of some imperfections.

Ok enough bantering you two.

On to serious business. I like my M3, but I am considering trading it in for an i-8. I 'think' I need practicality, but that may be past history as my three older sons are out of the nest. I do have a 2.5 year old to contend with, so child seat is a reality. Plus the occasional chicken feed. And I would love to carry windsurfers on the roof. Once a month long distance (1k miles) trip. I am a bit uncomfortable with the 'attention' my YMB M3 gets, so it would be gray/gray for the i-8.

Is the i-8 a reasonable choice?

Thanks for advice!

And given the point that the i8 is the price of an M6 in my country that would make a no brainer for me.
I live where you live. The M mobiles, Audi's RSs, etc. are everybody's favorite here, but still completely pointless in this country. You can go to jail for speeding, and they can confiscate and sell your car. Some go to Germany every once in a while to let the engines breathe, and so do I. But 95% of the time, you're stuck with tight speed limits, cameras everywhere, highways that weren't built for fast driving, and other motorists who take pleasure in reporting you to the police.

Why in the world would you want an M car that burns a fortune in gas money stop-and-going through Zurich traffic?

Because I don't live in Zurich (thank god) or Geneva. But in a more rural area, where I can actually drive my cars on nice country roads, the speed limits are still the same but we don't have speed cameras and patrol cars every 5 meters.
