i8 vs R8...doesn't the battery in the i8 drain down and therefore leaving you with only a 3 cylinder performance or does the breaking help regenerate the electric battery so you can always drive in sport mode with both engines working?

In "sport" mode the motor/generator unit behind (in front of?) the engine is always charging (except I would assume hard acceleration) to 2/3 battery level. It's a great feature as you can get, again assuming not track / hard throttle use approx. 1 mile back in battery for every mile you drive

My experience has been 2 miles of sport driving for 1 mile of recharge except when driven hard. And regenerative braking does very little.

That depends on where you drive and how you brake. I've gotten about a mile back just braking into an exit ramp. But that was in Germany, coming from 150+ mph. It helps to start coasting early. Late and hard braking engages the actual brakes much more aggressively, which of course, lets you recover nothing for the battery.

Even on 200+ mile runs on German highways, I have never even come close to running out of juice.

But the cool thing about the i8 is, you don't need it to run on both engines all the time. Only when you're accelerating or maintain extremely high speeds. If you're at constant, moderate speeds, like most people will be 99% of the time, all that power consumption is dialed right down to frugal levels. Until you need it again, and then ... Bam!
