Finally Got My New i8 + Question For You All
Hey everyone. So here is the update.
Just got back from my flights, the r8 is officially gone & traded in & the i8 is mine & paid for. Got put on the shipping truck today & will be to me in 9 days. I went & test drove & paid for / seen the i8 in person at BMW Of Salem in Portland Oregon & man...IM SO HAPPY WITH IT. Like Holy F#!k its amazing in person honestly!! Here are some pics for you all. As of now though only issue is I have no car until it comes haha. My wide body prior design 6 series is at SEMA for the show so I'm just with an empty garage haha. Also quick question. Have any of you done this mode or thought about it? I was thinking about black out smoking out the rear reflectors under the rear lights. Like all of the red but not the white spot for the reverse light for a more aggressive cool look. Anyone seen this done? Also me & Vossen Wheels are about to throw some new wheels on it & i'll do some small but nice other tweaks. What do you all think of the wheel below as well? |

Great wheel! What kind of finish are you thinking of? Here's another Vossen I liked:

It looks great and I'm glad you're happy with your purchase! I like the factory wheels but the tires are CRAP! Even if you stick with the factory wheels...lose the tires. Mine will be burned off at the end of the month! Regarding your M6...fantastic! I know that body kits are not for everyone but the full shot of your looks really great. I have not been a fan but this seems well done. How is the fitment? Any problems at high speeds or in extreme cornering? Thanks and congrats-mk |

Thanks!! Also no problem at all with the kit really. Prior design is a really high end body kit company & they had ultimate Auto assemble everything which is another well know shop for mods. As long as you get the mods by a pro shop & assembled by a pro shop your good. But yeah the performance & all seems even better to me I think but I just love the looks really I only got it for show & driving not to concerned about the performance as much with it |

Congrats on your car...love the white..Question...I see you sold an R8 to get the i8...why'd you get rid of the R8?...Which R8?..the 4.2 or 5.2? How does the i8 compare to it? Both are awesome from what I see..I ask because I am considering both but have only driven the i8..the i8 is intriguing but my concern is when the battery drains to near zero you are driving a sexy 3 cylinder car with no power. Is my thought process wrong?

If you keep the i8 in sport mode the battery gets recharged to over 50%. Unless you track it you will always have plenty of power. It's a great road car and a great real-world car. It's not a track car.

Hey, as the other person said, I keep the i8 in sport mode most of the time when on the highway or open roads with space but them to comfort mode where it will zip in & out of electric mode in traffic & that sport mode keeps the battery charged up pretty high all the time. Never need to plug in really. The r8 was a 2009 v8 model but it was tuned & modded & amazing for sure. Loved it. I just like to try new things & wanted to get something new that is worth more as well since the r8 was getting up in miles & hence low on worth. I dont regret it at all. The i8 kills the r8 on so many levels for me. Looks, Tech, Interior, Design, Being a future type car, the doors, the doors....the doors...the look Also it is as fast if not faster than the r8 v8 was most of the time & i'm still on these skinny lame stock tires. I know once I throw on these new wheels & pirelli p zero tires its going to get even stickier. I'm hearing & seeing some people get 0-60 times in 3.9 with a i8 as the best with a v8 r8 was about 4.3 4.2 or so. So you have the speed, the looks, the doors, the tech & all. Turns more heads & it is more rare. Never see that many i8s or R8s really but even in my small town there are a group of r8 owners. I am 1 of only like 2 or 3 i8 owners. The only thing I can say I really do miss & wish the i8 had that the r8 had is SOUUUHUNNNDDDDD. That v8 sounds was just amazing with that Stasis Exhaust man. The i8 sounds nice to in & out when you sport mode push it & down shifts have an amazing blip. But its not that MEAAAN loud engine power the r8 made. In the end though even if Audi offered me the new v10 model of the r8 with the new tech & faster & all that good stuff for my i8 i'd turn it down. Love the i8 its crazy. The only things so far I see that might replace it in another 3 years or so if I ever do it would be (thats out now & in my price range) McLaren 570S - real good chance McLaren 12c - prob not McLaren 650 - maybe Lamborghini Huracan - real good chance |

I recharge that way too, sometimes, when I really need a charge where I'm going. But it's like building a huge campfire to boil one egg. Much better to plug it in. |

Thanks guys...it is appreciated and now I have to drive both cars..it's a high class problem to have and I am in no rush...my next interest is how the i8 rides with aftermarket wheels...I test drove the i8 at a BMW Ultimate Drive event and it was only for about 2 miles. I only got a taste of the i8 but it was good enough for me to head to a dealer and take one out on a real test drive. It did seem a bit stiff and had the stock 19s...maybe 20s so I'd be interested in hearing how you think it rides on the street with bigger wheels...I'd personally consider 21s before the 22s as I live in the NYC area and as we all know the roads are ridiculously bad...the entire NYC area including the suburbs are bad if you are rolling 17s so need I say more...glad you love the car...I'm excited about the possibilities..

Bigger wheels and tires defeat the whole idea of the car. I know this is a controversial view, but I hold it passionately. The 20s are big enough and the patch they put down is appropriate for this car. This is a transition car, bridging the gap between ICE and electric, and blinging it out makes no sense to me.
But what do I know? I've only owned and driven BMWs for 45 years and by now I'm an old geezer.

And even if that weren't the case, recharging in Sport mode is still highly uneconomical. |
