Not entirely false though. I had an i3 for a little over a year. Bought back because it was in the shop too much. Fun car but so many problems (A/C not working, Rear axles broke/electric motor dropped while driving). I'm loved the car, hated the range anxiety, the range was very dynamic, but I'm glad it's gone. BMW trolled the public by releasing that car with so many issues. The remote app never worked properly too. A pain in my ass.
Now I have a Porsche and it's nice and fast, but the off the line acceleration doesn't feel faster than the i3, even though I know it is. Just the linear torque was something that was unlike any other car. |

I wonder if this means that the US M4 GTS and/or LCI will get laser headlights.

I can only agree with the other posters.....the linear acceleration in the i8 is amazing and especially compared to the turbo cars nowadays, that's a great differentiator. I cannot compare it to the Aventador though. It is true that you get sound pumped into the cabin, especially in Sports mode. I wasn't happy about that until I got the car and started to accept it, also for the reason that the engine itself sounds not so great when running. Therefore, you cannot compare it to the quiet Tesla ride.

Looks like a shark with frickin' laser beams attached to its head.

Is this the exact same part used for i8 laser lights in ROW with US specific programming? Or is it a special part for the US with different lighting elements?

That's a good question. I believe the regulations use the max lumen output capable by the hardware as the measuring point. LEDs, Xenon, etc. have a max allowable output of 3200 lumen. I don't know how BMW is interpreting it but they liekly have to use physically different hardware to achieve the lower output to make them legal in the US.

So I got confirmation yesterday that the laser lights are indeed in production, few months ahead of schedule!!! The good news: They are the gen 2 lights! Anyone know what that means? I am hoping this:https://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&sourc...UqIhDyn8WyWu-A
Laser high AND low beams?? The bad news is that they probably wont be adaptive as in the 7 series, meaning inly on-off high beam. Cant wait to get them and hear more info! |

The closest "feeling" BMW for me to the i8 was my Z4 which was very light and felt very compact. But the i8 is a big car, especially the width. After driving it my 650i convertible feels like a dinosaur. The M4 is a joyous challenge every time I get in. The i8 is soothing but can step on it whenever I want. It's quite remarkable.

I concur with MalibuBimmer. Personally, the feeling of driving a car with as much torque as the i8 new for me. I have always driven cars with most of the action in the upper portion of the rev band. I characterize the i8 as having more useable power and performance. The manner in which BMW has managed the power deployment is quite brilliant. I estimate the crossover speed in real-world performance between the M6 and the i8 to be about 75-80 mph. Thereafter the M6 will look like the Millennium Falcon entering hyperspace. And don't lose the love for the V-10...add to the fleet. The cars are so different and the M5/6 will keep you on your toes. The i8 is EASY to drive. EASY. Keep the M5 and continue to hone your skills. If you can drive it consistently fast, you can drive most cars fast. And yes...the best way to discourage racing in any S85 equipped car is to reply, 'Sure I'll race you...100 mph to 200 mph.' Silence. Cheers-mk Back to our originally scheduled thread. |

I had my i8 in for service and asked the tech about laser lights. He said they would only work as a high beam and are configured to automatically dim if they detect headlights. So he felt they would only stay on if you drove in areas with limited traffic
