Google your question, pretty sure the i3 and i8 don't have AM radio, something with the frequencies and the battery pack don't allow easy flow of the AM frequencies.

AM is there, but blocked in the software. Coding can enable it, but what's the point?

It has been disabled by BMW because there is too much interference with the AM band and sound will be poor.

Get the Tune In app for your smartphone. Plug the phone in to the USB port in the i8's center console. Turn on the Tune In app on your phone and select your favorite AM radio station. Turn on BMW Apps in ConnectedDrive with iDrive. Select Tune In. Turn on your sound system. Now you have AM radio, clear, with no interference.

I know, AM radio is virtually non-existant in Europe anymore due to the poor quality. It's still big in America, though, for all kinds of radio talk shows - sports event coverage, political monologues, etc.

I didn't know that

I can't remember the last time I listed to AM radio here. Must be over 10 years ago. Perhaps much longer than that.

I coded the AM radio back in. There really is not that much interference.

I did, too, about 18 months ago. I get a lot of interference but I live in the Santa Monica Mountains. I haven't tried it near downtown L.A. where I suspect reception would be better.
