I'm bored with my car - should I buy a 991 or GT350?

Hey guys.

Not sure if anyone else is going through the same thing as I am, but I'm bored during the pandemic. Being bored doesn't mean I'm not busy with work or family, but just in regards to cars, I'm bored.

I have a 2015 M3 that I modified pretty heavily and I also track/canyon drive regularly. Now that the pandemic hit and I also just had a newborn, I'm not really driving a lot. I mean I've still been modding the car (I actually wrapped my car blue during the pandemic and also installed a cool CAE short shifter), but I find myself looking at car websites for a new car to buy. Even though my M3 is perfect in every way. I think I'm bored...and I want a 991.1/2 911 or Mustang GT350. (I've actually written other threads recently where I even mentioned possibly safari'ing my M3 or buying a Tacoma...)

Now I'm thinking if I get an 911 or GT350, will I regret it and be bored again? haha is it the search that I am enjoying at the moment?

I need to go drive my m3 to get out of this funk. haha

Well regardless, here's a question for you guys. I've been thinking of the 911, but I figured, I could always get one later down the line. BUT the GT 350 seems like a moment in time car where I wouldn't see myself driving it when im a lot older. Is it really a special car just because of the motor? I wonder if its better than my F80. Thoughts?

Pretty sure you would never regret buying a 911. The GT350 on the other hand, while it is a great car, you would probably be looking for something different in a year or two.

Props on the wrap job. I find when I get bored with my car, a few hour detail brings back my enjoyment; nothing like a showroom M5 (in my case).

yeah, there's nothing like getting ready to sell your car that makes you want to keep your car. Houses are kind of like that too.

Yes, the GT350 is special just because of the motor. A GT PP2 is 90% percent of the performance, but doesn't have that glorious flat plane V8 rev range and sound.

You'll miss the M3 after you sell it.Thing is with a 911 after a while you'll may want something even more challenging.

Yes, the Gt350 is incredibly special, the motor is intoxicating. But not only the motor, the whole chassis feels reworked compared to the regular GT. Despite its hefty weight, it handles really well, and is very easy to drive like a hooligan. Its fun and feels pretty sharp, and the steering has great feedback (however I hear this was reduced with newer model years as they gave it the GT500's rack for 2019 I believe). The manual is excellent, and the clutch is very light (probably one of the parts I'd mod). The sound is amazing. Despite all this, this is probably not the best daily driver due to it still having a plastic mustang interior as well as vibrations in the cabin from the motor, and the engine is probably not the most reliable and drinks a lot of oil. But what a car, the first Mustang I've ever lusted after.

911 is a different game. Incredibly composed and excellent in handling, while still having all the perks of a great driver and the best quality of any German brand. It will be more expensive but will also hold its value, and can be used for both weekend and DD duty. Question is, what 911 variant are you looking at? New or used? 991 or 992? Carrera? GT? There are a ton of different variables to the 911 question.

Both cars will excite you compared to your F80 but who knows how long the excitement will last. Despite these being excellent cars, us being enthusiasts get an itch for a new car every so often so the excitement may or may not last, and you may become bored again.

Good luck OP.

I too find myself on the fence with my car (a 2015 DCT M3) mostly because I originally wanted a 997 Carrera S but could not find with Aero Package and low mileage. Now they have shot up significantly which puts you in the range of a 991 Carrera S / 981 Cayman GTS.

I like this car a lot dont get me wrong, but my previous car was an S2000 and dream car has and always will be a 911.

Depends on what you want. The 911 will be too refined and could be boring after a while. The 350 is more raw and will sound infinitely better. I cant imagine ever being bored of it. Its the one I would choose without question.

I own F80 M3 comp and recently got 991.2 T. Also shopped around for GT350.

It depends on what you are looking for.
To me, I much prefer M3 > GT350 and 911 is not even fair here.

GT350 has a great motor, love the design and ofcourse the sound but everything else is a compromise. Build quality sucks, interior is cheap, seating position is horrendous. The car feels Huge even compared to M3 where u sit lower and everything is much better designed around you. The low end torque on the M3 is much more useable than in GT350.

991.1 with NA motors will feel slower compared to M3 but the handling is amazing.
991.2 is the perfect package no matter which engine you get as you can tune it. The exhaust sounds much better than M3 and DCT is much smoother.

One thing about Porsche - you need to make sure the car you get has the right options which is why I went with 911 T that has all the sport options like sport exhaust, lower PASM suspension, SportChrono and my car also has Rear Wheel Steering. I test drove a base Carrera, S, GTS - all are different. Zillions of configurations on P cars so u need to take your time and test as many as u can. The other great thing is Porsche CPO gives you 2yrs of warranty coverage with unlimited miles.

You live in LA. You should be able to test drive both of these vehicles fairly easily. I'm sure 10 minutes in each car will give you more of an answer than anyone in here can.

Have you driven these cars?
911s sound good stock and incredible with aftermarket exhaust mods - plenty of options there. The 991.2 turbo cars can be tuned to make crazy power so you will not get bored easily lol.

I wish we got the GT350 here in Australia, that 5.2L sounds insane, way cooler than the 5.0.

I reckon it would be the more interesting choice over the 911.

It doesn’t matter what we want. Once we get it, we want something else. 911 😎

As good as that car is, its probably way too similar to OP's F80 to solve the boredom issue.

That pretty much summarizes it Every time I replace my car with something "more" I realize that "more" isn't enough.

Great video jstein55 . I watched it a few months ago and that exhaust note is intoxicating. The 350R is definitely on a different level. Great car in my opinion.

Hey Jstein55,

Are you a psychic? BECAUSE YOU KNOW ME SO WELL!

haha everything you’ve mentioned is pretty spot on.

I figured that the 911 would be my final choice in sport cars so before I go down that rabbit hole, I’d figure I’d try something new for a couple of years, like the GT350. You think we will see used GT350s in the mid 20s in 4-5 years? That would suck if I buy one now for $60k haha

Haha, I wish I could tell the future, and I don't know how many GT350's they sold but I think as time goes on they'll be sought after more. The Mach 1 is nice but its no GT350 and I think as time goes on people may realize just how great this model is, especially the 350R, so maybe they will eventually drop to a certain point and the go back up, but we won't know for some time. Also with the reliability of the Voodoo V8 and its addiction to oil I imagine they are best when they are low milage and young in age. I'm definitely curious to see the long-term effect of reliability on this model.

Curious, which 911 variant are you interested in? I think a 991.2 Carrera T (manual) could be a great choice.
