Foot patrol, the CRU is a prime job now, especially in the entertainment district (bars and nightclubs) they also are the bike guys. And frankly in the downtown core the bikes are a great way to get around with the congestion and you don't get detailed to calls so they get to pick and choose. When I first came on the job if you were on the post they issued you with two dimes to use at a payphone to call the station and report in. No portable radios for the foot guys back then. Talk about being on your own, you learned to talk and walk sometimes. We had a small truncheon and a .38, issued with 6 semi-wad cutters. If you wanted to carry extra you bought a strip loader and extra ammo. I remember when I got my first speed loader, that was the shit my friend.

I remember making a pinch and walking the client back to the station or if it was a long way and I'd used up my dimes taking them on the bus.....the job has changed a lot.

Buy the coffee's, do as you are told and pay attention. Don't wear good shoes, or clothes, bring hand sanitizer. Can be a very informative experience. Enjoy.....oh, and do not get in the back seat.

My advice….


…ask questions and interact. When you and the deputy encounter situations in the field, hypothesize what you might do and compare that to how the situation was actually handled. Consider the purpose of law enforcement (…and the liability we absorb to handle other people's problems), and think about your experience next time you have the opportunity to weigh in politically. Keep your head on a swivel (…you become a target as well the moment you get into that patrol car), be mindful of your distance/proximity to people you encounter and watch people's hands. Again, ask questions….and if you see something [that the deputy might've missed], say something. We miss stuff and make mistakes too. Lastly and most importantly, be prepared that, if shit hits the fan and that deputy gets injured and can't defend you, grab a gun and defend him/her. It has happened!!

So far as I know I have never blocked anyone. Never even had anyone act rudely here. Plus it's the internet. If someone really bugs you on the net maybe one should develop a skin. LOL.

We have them. In fact, one was on a ride along with us yesterday. We don't use them for the above stated purposes usually. All Deputies are issued reflective vests for traffic control, but those of us that are traffic trained have "TRAFFIC" lettering on our vests.
