That's funny. I was just looking at the top 10 monasteries in Tibet this morning and that was one of them. There was one that is carved into the mountain (literally hanging on to the cliffs). I thought that was crazy.

I'm considering Bali right now. It seems really cheap for a nice destination. I was looking into accommodation in Koyasan, Japan and it is expensive. I thought one could stay at a monastery for free for a few days. Rather not spend close to $300 a night on a soul-searching trip.

I got home tonight and Les Stroud is in the Andes, at full moon no less. I totally forgot about 15,000' above sea level though.

You'll just have to stay away from the tourist destinations though. Probably the north coast and the middle of the island is what you want. It's more peaceful there.
