Not surprising. Chris Kyle was a genuine hero who, in many ways, sacrificed his life for us.

And he was a flawed person, who liked to tell tall tales, or at least to embellish the truth.

That's likely to cost his widow (and an insurance company) a chunk of change. Jesse Ventura won a libel lawsuit (started when Kyle was alive, continued after his death against his estate, a very common thing) against him. Although the verdict was 8-2, Ventura's burden of proof was very high, as a public figure. He had to convince the jury that Kyle, a war hero, acted either with reckless disregard for the truth or actual malice. The case is being appealed.

Ventura was damaged. He served honorably in Vietnam (though never in combat), in a predecessor organization to the SEALs. And, despite the verdict, it's not likely he can ever again walk into a military reunion.

People and things are rarely simple.

The movie was over hyped and had severe pacing issues. Also Chris Kyle has some issues with honesty so much so that he lost a defamation lawsuit...it's stupid hard to LOSE a defamation lawsuit yet he managed to do just that so it's hard to know for sure which events happened and which didn't.

That said, it's an entertaining movie to watch. There were some definitely tense moments but the pacing just killed the intensity and emotional impact. It would've been better if they cut an extra 30-45 minutes out. Bradley Cooper does a good job as portraying Chris Kyle and the overall toll war takes on you but I don't think it's worthy of the Oscar hype.

Eddie Redmayne's performance in Theory of Everything (also nominated) blows Cooper's performance out of the water...even if Theory of Everything was a disappointing movie IMO.
