Why did BMW M choose the name Dakar Yellow? You can't exactly "Dakar" an M3

I know it was a standard color on the E36 M3, and it has also been ordered through BMW Individual on a handful of later generation M3s.

Why did BMW M name their yellow "Dakar Yellow"? This might sound like a dumb question, but Dakar is an extremely rough off-road race that actually might be harder in terms of terrain than the Baja 1000. Why name a grip car's color after a nutty-off road race?

Traditionally the colours that are M exclusive are named after a race or racetrack.

Right, but they are all tracks or situations you could drive a M3 on.

I am not sure if anyone has ever Dakar'd an M3. A quick google just pulls up all yellow M3s lol

Well, obviously you are not going to put an M3 into the Dakar off-road race..!!

But, it's still an "automotive race" and who really cares if you can't put an M3 in it..?? Big deal.

It’s <insert race track here> and <insert color name here>. I wouldn’t overthink it.

Touché.

It's not like an Estoril II F30 328i automatic with M-sport was made to compete at the Autódromo do Estoril either.

In any case, race tracks & racing often serve as the inspiration for paint color names for cars originating from BMW's esteemed Motorsport division.
Sometimes these colors are later streamlined and made available to M-sport equipped models.

Ever seen a Le Mans Blue E90 320d compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans?
Me neither.

No big deal, it's just a paint color.
