Having seen the new 4 series in person, to my eye, the front grille when blackened (Shadow-line), blends nicely with a darker colored car compared to a chrome edged grille.

I think if the grille edge was offered in the car's body color, it would look more integrated with the overall design.

thanks for posting that. I was about to say the exact same thing. the biggest difference for me is the waistline, but that has nothing to do with the roofline.

Below picture shows the trim difference. Signature Sport at the top and Essence at the bottom. Based on this, the i4 reveal pictures yesterday must be from the i4 Essence trim level. Hope they will show a more sportier trim as well.

But in the right color, i'm sure that the new grille of the i4 will blend nicely with the rest of the car.

those look very much like "cars I'd never buy." kind of a shame really.

Just another case to prove me this grill is a disaster.
I am sure I will get used to it though. Seeing over and over will get me over from this stage of "God I hate it". I will just get used to seeing this ugly grill.

But why do you want to "get used to it" or "learn to tolerate it"? There are SO MANY other choices and brands that make better cars that are far more attractive as well. In addition, those brands do not insult their customers and make bigoted comments like BMW has here. Instead, they listen to feedback and try to pivot when mistakes have been made.

In this case, BMW's leadership and designers gave the middle finger to their customers and decades of BMW design language. Why in the world would anyone want to "get used to" that?

You're welcome! The degree of emotional arousal among some/many is so interesting. I expected the general response/complaint about the car to be (other than the grille) that the car was too derivative of the preceding generation. But, the comments mostly seem to take a different direction. I think the car is fine as it seems so similar to the current GC, and the minutiae some are intensely focusing on will be lost/unnoticeable in traffic for all but the most obsessed, such as one here who has a "headache" from trying to interpret the disparate design cues. Seriously? If you parked them side-by-side and stopped 100 people to ask which one is newer or they like better (other than the provocative grille), random chance guessing would prevail. BTW, if I expressed the same degree of sensitivity about "waistlines" as I read here, I would have been divorced a long time ago!

The i3s (42kWh) is $47.7k. How will the i4 be under $50k. I hope so, but I see no way a larger car, more battery is only an additional $2k. Take out the CF and replace with steel? Market average is about $130 per kWh. At best I thinks its a $57-$59k vehicle.

A few years ago we got the BMW i Vision Dynamics. We also got the Audi eTron GT concept during the Avengers movie.

The only difference is that Audi kept their finished product looking nearly identical to the original concept, which is on par with the i Vision Dynamics.

You're missing the bigger point. The two products display their company's direction in bringing their most-cutting-edge technology to market. One manufacturer is releasing a pedestrian product with questionable styling; the other is releasing a sexy product people will lust for.

Looks great, but I agree, the Hofmeister kink should not have been lost and what's up with the blue outlines where twin exhausts might be??
This is so unnecessary and dumb. The iX3 has these stupid caps as well.

Maybe the design is just too polarising, so that it would make sense to Ararat are new thread to talk about the technical aspects. Maybe the EV offer is a more concerning topic here in Europe as it is massively forced not only by tons of money from the government, but also by restrictions that are in discussion, like the new emissions norm EU7, which could delete ICE models totally or already existing facts like the ban of ICE cars in the UK (could come to the EU too).

I will get my f90 in a few weeks (hopefully) and I will try to enjoy it together with the 3er as long as I can - but then I need something to replace at least the 3er as a good powerful daily driver with a proper range (I drive about 60000 km a year). That's why people in Europe might be more focussed on the abilities of the car, even if it means to drive in an ugly but fast can on four wheels :
No problem. Surely , all respect and understand.

Though it's just personally I'm so disappointed with BMW designer. It's like telling the hardcore BMW fans that you either accept it or go away.

Likewise , I had load of friends on F82, all not opting to get the new M4 just because of the awful design. What a shame to BMW.

I will stay tune and see what BMW react and remediate before I decide my next destination...

The design and marketing teams both need to be shown the door. Very lazy and cliché design with "EV" accents. The rear reminds me of an alfa romeo.

LOL. People will see what they want to see for their own biases.

It's like people complaining about the production car being very different than the concept.

Looks like 3 strikes and you're out BMW. Tesla already took your lunch and ate it while you couldn't decide what to do after the i4 and i8. This new design isn't going to win anyone back who's already left for Tesla.

I really wanted to like the i4 but damn, is BMW that arrogant to think they can slap a badge on any hideous design and people will buy it?

The answer is "yes". Have you been reading the comments they have made? Sheer arrogance and narcissism. They have even made bigoted statements against certain groups of people and insulted their customers for not buying/liking their new cars.

It is going to be fun, real fun, watching the mass exodus of customers steering away from this company filled with some pretty disgusting individuals. Although, they may pick up some customers that like their negativity, especially toward certain groups of people. So maybe it will be a wash.

It was rhetorical lol. For context:

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1761187

We've been having this discussion for over 6 months now in the F8x section and it's not going to end well with this new design direction

Tesla has no grill at all, as it has no functionality in EV.
But BMW need giant nostrils for what? To cool groceries in that front trunk?

According to BMW, the massive grill is to house the immense amount of electronics that they have. And there was no way for them to reduce the size of the grill to house all the electronics. Either the electronics they are using it from the 1980s, or they're full of horsesh*t. Or it's combination of both considering their electronic still pale in comparison to Tesla and we know that they don't need that much space to house a few small sensors.

The truth is that they purposely made these gargantuan and dysmorphic grills because, as Dukec said, he wants to do away with all BMW designs. He called them old and boring and useless. He also said that cars don't need to look good.

That's what they said with respect to the iX.

The i4 seems to have a "traditional" off-center ACC sensor hidden away by cheap plastic just like the G22. And it has the exact same grille as the 4er coupe/convertible and the upcoming gran coupe.

And why not? It's just the BEV-version of the G26 4er Gran Coupe (the i4's internal chassis code is literally G26) just like the iX3 is the BEV-version of the X3 (well the Chinese long-chassis version of it, but still, the front is identical). It's a bit baffling that people think BMW owes them another pair of kidney grilles for the i4 compared to the rest of the 4 series.

Whether or not the 4 series grille was a great move by the BMW designers is a different discussion, but that ship has sailed a while ago.

It might have looked less like it had been run into a wall if it had one or at least managed how to go grilleless better than that crushed snout.
