the "nicer" beaches where you can actually lay out and have fun are in southern california. the water is super cold in northern ca. monterey and santa cruz are nice for sight seeing. you can take the highway 1 drive.

check out san francisco if you haven't. there are plenty of sight seeing things for you to do.

You should roll up the 101 to like Pismo Beach & San Luis Obispo. Can't go wrong up there. Pismo is a nice sleepy beach town and San Luis has some amazing hillside scenery.

Monterey, Santa Cruz, Pebble Beach & Big Sur are sure bets for scenery and nature. For beach living you need to head south, anywhere from Santa Barbara down to San Diego.

Don't waste your time in Sacramento. The only interesting things there are titty bars and cheaper drugs.

Newport Beach = nice town, lots of beachside homes and rentals.

Huntington Beach = Surf city.

Santa Monica Beach = it's just another beach. Nice. Don't think surfers would want to surf there. They'd rather to go to Malibu beach.

You should check out Venice Beach. It's interesting little city. Lots of weirdos & interesting people hang around there. Oh yes, they do have water pathways between the houses (like in Venice, Italy).

Definitely nothing going on in Sacramento, San Fran is cool, lots of good restaurants (expensive) and bars. Santa Cruz boardwalk is fun if the weather is good, Moterey pretty touristy, SLO and central coast is fun and a nice drive. Heading north of San Fran is wine country, lots of places to chill there.

Our weather may not be as warm, but beaches just as beautiful. Hit up Davenport in Santa Cruz. It is right next to the miles and miles of strawberry fields along the coast.
San Fransico can be pretty fun too, just be sure to not get lost too bad. (It can get ghetto in 1 street).
San Jose has a decent area. I live in Willow Glen the downtown is a good place for a good coffee and shops. Since your in town I HIGHLY suggest you take Skyline Boulevard, it starts in a city 10 miles from San Jose and ends in San Fransico. The drive to San Fransico on it is amazing! Triple digits are very attainable too!

Start in San Francisco.

Drive down the coast to San Louis Obispo. You can stay on the 1 all the way through pretty much. It's a beautiful drive and I suggest spending at least a few days on it if you can afford the hotel rooms in the area.

San Francisco itself has more to offer than you can ever imagine. I do not know what kind of scene you are into, but I guarantee the City has it.
