I had one - nice car but tough to find with lower miles. Also OP could probably benefit from 4 doors of current version.

Yeah, those idiots even listed snow tracking by make and model without specifying the most important part - tires. I can grantee that RWD BMW with good snow tires will have better traction than any Subaru with crappy tires. So which AWD system is better? The answer is the one with better tires. But if tested with similar tires Acura's AH-AWD is one of the best/most advance AWD system available. BMW has similar system on X5m/X6m and new X5/X6 with optional torque vectoring. Here is a great demonstration of both AH-AWD and xDrive with torque vectoring: |

Don't worry about the different AWD systems. Get the car you like the most and get a good set of winter tires.
Including AWD, there is not single better way to improve winter/snow driving performance than tires. |

Jeep.
Usually up North by the trails it helps to have ground clearance in addition to 4x4/AWD when the snow falls. There have been times I had to drive through 2ft of snow in Vermont to get home. That is why I still own my 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Good tires and 4-Wheel drive and I can push snow with the bumper. Very simple and easy to work on, parts are pretty cheap. Mine has 175k miles on it and has never left me on the side of the road. Subarus are very popular up there as well, but the few people I have known with Subarus said they wouldn't buy one again. Huge amounts of oil consumption, head gasket failures, turbo failures, CVT transmission problems, etc.

Acura SH-AWD does torque vectoring on the rear axle. It does not do torque vectoring on the front axle. So it can send the majority of the power going to the rear wheels to one side or the other, but not all the wheels. SH-AWD also doesn't have a center differential. It has a power takeoff unit from the transaxle. It's up to the computer to decide when the PTU sends power to the rear wheels, and sometimes it's not sending any power to the rears. I live in Wisconsin, and based on my experience with several different types of awd/4wd vehicles, really what helps when the snow gets deep is having a real center differential where by default the car sends power to both front and rear axles, and is varying the split depending on available traction. The only way to get through the deep snow is to have both front & rear wheels churning. Being able to move power side to side across an axle is nice, but it's not a substitute for a center diff. |

That's correct, because SH-AWD is a sport oriented AWD which helps you to corner better thru rear torque vectoring. You won't need a center differential unless traveling in deep snow. For normal winter conditions SH-AWD is one of the best systems available. The main disadvantage of SH-AWD is that toque vectoring only works under acceleration (unlike torque vectoring in X5m/X6m/F15 w/ DHP which will work under braking). Most drivers will apply brakes in the slippery curve which will disable toque vectoring.

So I test drove an Acura and wasn't a fan. Even if the awd is solid. Was debating between the x3 and forester but ended up picking an x3 3.0si for 10k that only had 50k miles on it! Beat the heck out of my original budget so now I have play money for my m3 and Z4 ))
Thanks all for some solid advice though!!

We're on our 2nd Forester, and our next car will be another Forester or an Outback. I think the X1 is too small for what it is, but the 2011 X3 is a good alternative. If you don't mind the more expensive maintenance, go for it, but I would rather get the Outback honestly. We take our Subaru up to Big Bear every year, several times while it was snowing. Solid as a rock.

Just came back from Lake Tahoe. Almost every single car that Isaw was a Subaru Outback: new or used. Look into that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My Forester looks pretty damn good passing people on the side of the road struggling in the cold and frozen mud trying to put on chains while I sip my coffee and drive on through.

With proper tires, it should surpass most everything else that has been suggested for your performance needs. Some don't like the aesthetics - I think they're badass. Tons of relatively cheap and easy modifications available, too.

Just make sure to use some of that savings to get a good set of winter tires and ideally a set of rims to put them on
