Street Legal Road Car Rallies

Folks - my brother and I have been talking about signing up for a checkpoint style road rally, eg, Cannonball Run, Gumball 3000, etc. However those I just mentioned are crazy expensive. American Gumball is another one that is happening in MI this August and is much more reasonably priced. Wondering what other rallies you all are aware of…

Post links please and your feedback if you participated in it.

The Great Race had an organized stop in our town last weekend. It was nice seeing the vintage cars going by.

I ran the Nevada Open Road Challenge. It sure was fun to pull up next to a sheriff deputy at the start line, and have him wave you off on a totally legal ~90-mile run at flat-out speeds on a state highway. My trip home was more fun, because I detoured through Montana during their "reasonable and prudent" daytime speed limit days. I drove 617 miles in under six hours, and that included two gas stops, a few souvenir shop visits, and three rest area bladder dumps. Better than flying to Germany for an autobahn run, and essentially zero traffic the entire time.

I also raced in the One Lap of America, which at the time was still being organized by Brock Yates (Cannonball Run movie writer). It was over 5,000 miles driving between a whole slew of famous race tracks, where everyone did two time trial (think NASCAR qualifying) laps for score. The race officials did not encourage speeding between tracks, but there was an unofficial betting pool for who would get the most and highest speed tickets among most of the drivers.

Glad that I did both from a bucket-list perspective, but I'd never do either of them again.....

Is the BABE rally still being held? Big Apple to Big Easy. cheap cars, sell them in New Orleans. Been years since I thought about it.

There also used to be an outfit called Vintage Rallies. Pre-Covid so perhaps no more.

Targa Newf would be super fun. Prep and planning is a bit daunting for me, but I’d love to try it.

haha yea, you can say that again. Two guys died last week in a new turbo S when it flipped at 140 on a rally out in Colorado, or Vegas, can't remember where but it was out west.

You might want to consider the 'non-hollywood' version of road rally. Used to be called 'TSD' (Time-Speed-Distance). I haven't done one in decades, but it was great fun early in my driving years. No supermodels, but also no fatal rollovers.

Targa Tasmania is a gold standard event but flights may blow the budget a little!

Happened here in Colorado, only a couple of hours after the start of the rally. Crown Rally.

Man that's sad. Not sure how the crown Rally works but I like to concept for the track based, points-earning ones, eg Drag Week. There's a cutoff time to be at the next track and you must hit checkpoints along the way. Points are earned solely based on performance at the track. Then move on to the next track, rinse, repeat. There's plenty of time to go between tracks so no need to speed to get there.
