I'm wondering, since there's only a few colours shown on the visualiser at this time, will more options be available by launch? Or maybe BMW Individual? It's going to be an expensive car in Europe, I would have thought there would be a lot of personalization available. Even the i3's Solar orange isn't offered?

I am not a fan of this car. I do not expect them to sell a lot of these cars in the United States.. If this car and an M6 are on the lot at the same time. I take the M6 every single time. The headlights are blasphemous..

BMW should have built a proper super car to go against the R8 and the SLS AMG..

Pretty cool, be awesome if BMW made a super car version with a v10 or something.

This car is awesome... at up to $100k. Beyond that and it's a joke on the buyer. The price makes sense for all the doodads the i8 offers, but its crazy for such a highly niche car. NSX is the hybrid supercar to wait for. For right now I would gladly have a loaded cayman/boxster S over the i8.

Wondering the same thing.

Also wondering if the CRFP wheels will be available in the US? Article mentions "in markets that regulations allow them" not sure what list of markets that entails.

The I8 looks great in black.
Having said that, this is a marketing car, not a super car.
Maybe we will see it with a S engine along it's lifecycle, it should, this design deserves a special engine.
I'm sure it will sell decent.
I guess it look more special in RL also.
As for the R8 compare, it's a rebadget lambo.
And the Porsche is boring next to this.
It's not a decent competitior to the I8, it's pretty special, and it looks that way to!

Some people really think the Tesla S is better? How so? This is more of an everyday/anywhere car than the Tesla will ever be.

Personally, as of today, I would feel more comfortable driving a car with battery + fuel than just battery alone! Can you imagine the nerve wracking when you’re miles away from home and your battery juice is low?

I wonder what those wheel arches could hold. If you could fit some 285 Michelin PSS in the rear with 245 up front, you could have a real looker on your hands. Of course mileage and possibly acceleration would suffer, but imagine the stance this would have.

And its finally here.
$135K for a 4-cylinder/battery powered transportation machine with a 0-60 of 4.4s?
Oh, I forgot, it has cool doors, that justifies the price.

+1 exactly! What's the relationship between BMW i and Individual? Will there be one?

The car looks great. I probably wouldn't spend that much money on it....that's of course if I had that much.

The great thing with cars like this is that some of it's experimental technology will eventually trickle down to more affordable models.

The one thing that looks off is the rear view mirror. It looks dated compared to the rest of the interior.

For 130k i would have expect the same design with A LOT of power around M5 or M6 standards with a small electric engine for some hybrid features, but definitely not an amazing design with a POS engine and features, i dont care if it has LED or laser headlights, what use is that for when you look fast but can get smoked by V6 mutang or camaro
This is a great looking car, however I always wondered why BMW doesn't have a real halo car. I would think this body design with the engine from the M5/M6 could be that car. The M6 is just too big and heavy to be that car. I also think that BMW could use this body along with the engine and tranny from the M5 and be in the same price range as the i8 and this car could rival the Audi R8 and 911 turbo/turbo S.

Not sure I'm following you.

Even the outpout performance of the Tesla is dependent on its battery. And this article is about STARTING costs. Do we know if there are different battery options? Cause that Tesla can do 0-60 in about 4.2, if you get the high end battery.

Even R/C cars perform better with better batteries. In life sized cars, the principles remain the same. Put an average battery in a car, you get average performance. Put a high performance battery in, and you get longer mileage and higher, noticeable performance.

It's all about the BATTERY, and I'm sorry, but I believe the Ford and Camero would have a hard time keeping pace. The Shelby's brakes are horrendous (dangerously inadequate when hot) and the rate that the oil gets hot is a major concern. The Camero is as heavy as a Russian WW1 tank.

And there are a lot of people who have the money and would buy this car, even if its to "show face", even if its PRETENDING to care about the environment. Still, I don't think people will buy it for the environment, but instead because its new and fresh and they WANT it.

I'm in S. Florida. I'd buy it. Why? Because I LIKE it, and in S. Florida, a Lambo and Ferar come a dime a dozen. The i3 will definitely stand out. Plus, I'm a little bit of a BMW "fanboy."

It may be "who goes fastest" to the younger crowd, but the more mature buyer know that "fast" means carelessness, jail-time, fines, loss of control and perhaps death for yourself and someone else. So, that is not a consideration. What is more important to the more seasoned and mature buyer, is USABLE POWER. Aint no one actually using the power of a M cars. Its a car on the road with wasted power - unused. It's the BADGE that you buy, and a lot of people will want the i3 BADGE.

I like it. But, I'd still get a 760Li over any other BMW. To me, it's still the KING of all BMWs.

I of course like the design. Regarding the price/performance and alternatives it's obvious that you can get much better performing cars for the price - especially in a track situation. But this thing has some advantages too over those:

- You can drive 22 miles on electric power only and recharge in 3.5 hours from a regular 110V plug. That is amazing. I could basically run all my workweek on electric power and lot's of people could too.

- It looks very exotic.

- It is relatively lightweight for it's price range and extremely lightweight for a hybrid.

The key question for me is: will it be fun to drive? Most reviews have been positive so far. It will be slower than an M6 (or even an M4) for sure, but it *may* be more fun to drive in a mountain road - especially compared to an M6.

If it is a lot of fun to drive, I could see myself accepting the tradeoff of less performance for the price.

Any of the speeches I’ve heard at NYIAS press events regarding the i8 and i3 framed the concept as proving that electric vehicles don’t have to be boring and have poor dynamics. I’m ready to assume they achieved that goal with the i8 and i3, but the i8 doesn’t seem like a great ELECTRIC car to me. The electric range is very limited, and the vehicle isn’t practical AT ALL.

It seems to me BMW made a decision to develop some new technologies for their road cars, namely CFRP components (including chassis), and hybrid electric-gasoline drive. To exercise this direction, they built a small city car, the i3, and a flagship representation of The Ultimate (gas-electric) Driving Machine with the i8. I can see the logic. I just wish those engineering/development/production resources were spent on making their conventional vehicles better.

This car is disappointing. That engine looks like crap. would rather buy a Telsa Model S and save the 65K for the strip club
