IX 50 range at max speed (Autobahn)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com While not the best video out there I thought this was fairly interesting. This guy took the IX onto the Autobahn and drove it at its top speed of about 125mph (I think 205kmph). Based on his range from a charge of 100% to about 15%, he estimates the total range at top speed is about 108 miles or 174 km (results at about minute 7). Look I completely get that it will be less efficient when pushing the IX. You would get a similar situation of range loss at 125mph if running a Tesla or even an ICE Vehicle (at perhaps a lower gear). And weather could also be a factor. Still it is interesting to see the consumption at that range. I wonder how linear that range loss is from what we’ve seen from various posters when driving around 70mph to that 125mph. As I don’t live in Germany, I don’t know how many people practically drive 125mph for 108 miles. But in the US, particularly once you leave the coasts, I often see people driving 85-95mph for long stretches. I wonder what the range of IX is around those speeds? Also wonder if there are sites or videos out there that’s gives us a similar sense of range loss when driving other EV’s or ICE vehicles at a higher speed just for sake of comparison. |

Bjørn Nyland did a fairly comprehensive range test here:
At about 75 mph, he recorded 227 miles in winter conditions, which is probably realistic. Boost that to 85 mph and you're likely looking at 200-ish in winter driving, maybe 250 in summer on a full pack, although realistically you won't average 85 mph, and I drive out West a lot, so my guess is in open country Interstate driving in the US you could expect to average well over 200 miles under most conditions on a full battery. 95 mph sustained on I-80 will cost you more for your first ticket than you'll pay in charging costs . I would assume so. I’m not an engineer and don’t know how any of this works. Actually, I also tend to drive really locally for a lot of short trips and I assume its even worse on an ICE vehicle than electric because the EV has regen opportunities (but I’m completely talking out my butt). On my 2020 X5 M50I, it claims to have 16 city/22 highway and according to my vehicle on the trip meter (which I’ve never reset) it looks like my MPG on about 12kish miles is about 14mpg.
I guess the difference here is I could find a gas station with relative ease. With the IX, its a different case….I have not taken my Model Y on many roadtrips but where I live (close to NYC) there are two superchargers near me that are about 20 minutes from where I live but then it starts to get much more sporadic the farther I drive away from NYC. |

Maybe a little more intuitive, with a calculator and some info:
https://www.mpgforspeed.com/ And interestingly, the range differences look not dissimilar for ICE and EV - wind resistance appears to be king in the effect on range vs speed.... |

Is there any real world usage in the US yet or just not enough people that have these yet to report back what they are seeing? If any have even been delivered in the US.
