The car looks really busy from some angles - too much going on.

Hope the real car is cleaned up.

This is Toyota we are talking about... they design cars that look like they will cut up whoever they run into.

LOL...fair point.

The previous Supra was a much simpler design, too bad Toyota didn't stick with that design philosophy.

Yeah, but, I'll take that over the rental car-ready boring ass look.

It's like they went from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other extreme. There is good design and there is design that is only good for to attract attention regardless if it looks good or not. Toyota clearly does not care if their designs look good or not as long as normal people think getting notice is cooler than driving something that actually looks good.

That's what Lexus is to me. Designed just for the sake of attracting attention, not that it's good looking.

This was made using GC 3D photos of the MK4 and GR Supra concept from Hum3D. It doesn't seem to be that much smaller than the old model.

The sketch that inspired the new Toyota Supra

https://www.motoring.com.au/the-sket...-supra-112795/

Quote:
Toyota’s US design studio instrumental in the genesis of new halo car

Toyota’s highly anticipated Supra may never have been green-lighted for production if it wasn’t for the curiosity of a skilful team of Californian designers.

Several years ago, Kevin Hunter and his Calty design research team inadvertently took a lead in the design of the upcoming halo car, toying around with some sketches.

As Hunter recently outlined to motoring.com.au during a visit to Australia, the humble drawings soon took a pathway of their own, ultimately growing to become the FT-1 Concept that forms the technical and design basis of the latest Japanese supercar.

“The FT-1 was pretty awesome for us — first the concept and then the race car that was inspired by us,” said Hunter.

“We started FT-1 from nothing. We weren’t even asked to work on it from our home office. It was an idea that we proposed to head office to try and bring Supra back into the line-up.

“We didn’t call it Supra. It was really called FT-1 at the time. Ultimately, though, that was the purpose of it.”

What started out as sketches soon turned into something much bigger at the Californian studio; a project that will finally come to a head next year when Toyota follows up a new production version of its most prized nameplate.

“We had budget for it and we presented some sketches to my boss in Japan – he’s the head of all design. He liked the sketches and he said ‘go for it’,” Hunter said.

“That was it. It worked. We made a few updates to it and then we showed it to Akio Toyota [Toyota’s global boss] when we finished the model and even worked with the guys at Gran Turismo so he could drive the car.

“From that, [Toyoda-san] said ‘let’s make a show car’. We’re really happy with it because we basically instigated it,” Hunter added.

Toyota went one step short of unveiling the latest iteration of its legendary supercar in March by showing off the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept at the Geneva motor show.

Toyota has committed to reviving the storied Supra nameplate in the near future, and the GR is a clear pointer. Insiders are calling the concept a ‘GT’ version of the real deal.

Officially, the show car is said to provide a “huge visual clue”, bearing a ’90’ race number on its doors to designate the codename for the fifth-generation model to follow the A40, A60, A70 and A80 Series before it.

Employing lightweight composite materials in body panels including the bonnet, front and rear bumpers, front splitter and rear diffuser, plus a plastic windscreen and side glass, the racing concept borrows heavily from Toyota’s motorsport forays.

Look beyond its motorsport additions, however, and the GR is pretty much what the Supra will look like when it hits showrooms in mid-2019.

MKV's insider has some new info to share.

Covered these forever ago, but nice to see the information is still accurate (though not shocking this late in development). Also, looks like production may indeed begin in the November/December 2018 window as originally reported.

I thought it was gonna end up being new architecture, but I thought it would be derived from an existing design; apparently it is not.

the 4cyl thing is still being developed surprisingly (Toyota isn't really involved I guess), there is no NA I6, and BMW has no idea which motor they want to offer or if multiple.

The weight does match this old interview via EVO. Idk, about the new motor apart, kind of sounds to good to be true. Guess we'll know for sure in a few months.

Quote:
'The car should be lighter than its rivals', Tada-San’s admiration for the Porsche Cayman over the larger, heavier 911 gives a hint to the new car’s size and character.

2019 Toyota Supra to Enter NASCAR’s Xfinity Series Next Year

Quote:
In North America, Toyota runs the Camry sedan in both the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series. Next year, however, the Japanese automaker will replace the Xfinity-spec Camry for the all-new Supra according to insider intel.

Sports Business Journal argues that the change comes as a result of dwindling sales of sedans in the United States of America. Sports cars aren’t doing too great either, but on the other hand, the Supra is inherently sporty while the Camry is a reliable sedan for people who just want to go from point A to point B in comfort.

For the month of April 2018, Toyota’s sedan sales in the U.S. dropped by almost 5 percent compared to the same period last year. And as a consequence to that, SUVs and trucks are gaining ground across the board.

The last time Toyota won the Xfinity Series was in 2016, scoring 1,362 points and 19 wins as opposed to Chevrolet’s 1,341 points and 11 wins. On a related note, Chevrolet introduced the Camaro to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season, while Ford intends to take the Mustang to the top level in 2019 as a replacement for the Fusion.

At the end of the day, modifying the Supra per NASCAR rules isn’t NASCAR trying to get more fans, but Toyota trying to get people more interested in the brand. The U.S. public already knows that Toyota is a byword for reliability, but now Toyota wants to remind the people that the Supra is the highlight in its sports-car lineup.

Reviving the nameplate for a BMW Z4-twinned vehicle may be a marketing move from the Japanese automaker, but on the other hand, Toyota made it clear time and again that the Supra will be more driving-centric than the Z4. Bearing in mind the 2019 season starts in February at Daytona, the Supra is all but confirmed to go on sale for the 2019 model year.

That would seem to point against the GR branding that's been floating around. At least it would be really odd if Toyota's racing efforts weren't actually Toyota at all.

I think they may call it the "Toyota Supra GR". GR being the sub brand or performance arm similarly/kinda like Dodge SRT and Hyundai N performance.

Makes more sense than creating another sub brand. Would be amusing to have the GT86 move from now dead Scion back to Toyota and then to the Great Gazoo.
