IDrive8 reboot delay
I held down the volume for 2 minutes with the car on but the center screen didn’t come back on. Gave up. When I returned to the car an hour later, screen was back with all info except map details. Those came back after I drove for 30 minutes. Is this common? What happened? Thanks

I assume you rebooted because of some issue, so likely related. Not unheard-of, but not the usual result of a reboot. Certainly the central screen going blank is not "unusual," or particularly rare based on this forum, and a sleep cycle usually fixes as it did in your case. It's a computer, and a pretty complex computer since it controls multiple mechanical machine functions, running some pretty complex software. The good news is that it has a lot of redundancy and self-diagnosis baked in, and can frequently be reset/restored remotely. You also didn't mention version (the latest version I believe is 3/2023.53), so an update might correct whatever problem you were having.

By the way, you only have to hold the volume button down for about 30 seconds to do a reboot. Holding it down any more than that just makes it reboot repeatedly which might have caused your issue.

Version is 11/2022.64. Held the volume down for 2 minutes because I called BMW Assist and they said hold for 110 seconds (which didn’t work so they told me to take it to a dealer—but I’m 400 miles from home on a holiday weekend and need to get around).
This is my second time rebooting and the first went smoothly. Thanks for the comments. |

By the way, I discovered that you can do it while you’re driving. Mine reboots after just 20 seconds or so. I have tried doing it for 90 seconds and all I did was reboot multiple times, so I don’t know why they tell people that. |

Again, depending on whatever problem you're attempting to fix, another type of reboot is a diagnostic reboot (sometimes called a "deep" reboot), which is simply putting the car in diagnostic mode (press the Start button 3 times quickly when the car is off - a popup will tell you you're in diagnostic mode), then performing a normal reboot (holding down the Volume button until the screen goes off and continue holding until the "OK" prompt reappears - forget timing it). You may need to restore some settings, maybe not. And when you get a chance, a good idea to have your dealer install at least v3/2023.45 (3/2023.53 will then install OTA sometime if the dealer doesn't).

Thanks, I’ll contact my dealer. The issue I had in my attempts to reboot before it made it’s reappearance was that I never saw a screen except the blank screen with “BMW” in the middle no matter how long I held the volume down. Thanks again.

Ah - now we're getting somewhere! Actually not uncommon, and I've had it happen in earlier X5 models and the iX50.The screen freezes and the BMW logo is all you see, and everything is unresponsive. In iD7, that sometimes meant a failing TCU (had one replaced). In the iX it appears (for now) to be some sort of iD8 software or firmware gremlin. The resolution appears to be what you described - shutting down for an hour or so (or overnight), then restarting. It could be some sort of "reset" from iD8, for whatever reason, but a sleep cycle seems to fix it. Good idea to have a dealer run diagnostics though, although my SA found nothing in the history.
