So Bimmer-Tech can evidently code anti-dazzle lights on the iX for $175. I asked what happens when there's an update, and they said it would have to be re-done at a $75 charge.

One member in ******** says they did this & it does function properly.

I considered doing it, but $175, then $75 for every update seems steep.

I'm wondering *how* they were able to code this...

Here’s the best part, it may void your warranty and prevent you from getting future updates. Probably not worth the risk if you can’t do it yourself.

It may have been possible on an i4 until a recent software update…

My thought is that was possible up to a specific software version, after that no more. The folks that were able to will likely loose it and not be able to re-code after again.

This would never have been possible on IX since all the modules bar MGU and RAM have been on secure coding 2.0 since launch. SC2 = no data files = no coding.

The only way this type of modification can be done is if BMW decides to allow it, then makes the procedure available in their ISTA software and finally allows dealers to perform the update.

I can almost guarantee that all of those mods will be wiped out after each software update…. (If it even works).

Yep - I asked Bimmer-Tech - they said this will be overwritten on software update, and would cost $75 to redo.

My question is - how did they accomplish this?

Probably just like the way they used to do the widescreen CarPlay mod on the G30. It usually involves dancing around the certificate and hacking the headunit code directly which requires an INET cable and hacked software. They seem to be a reputable company, so they may have purchased the service software from BMW. It’s too bad they charge for redos as some of the smaller guys just put in an automated programming routine through a remote session tied to your VIN. Of course parameters and keys change during software updates, so it requires constant maintenance.

In the USA BMW offers dealer level access to indi shops through https://bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com (you can technically use it anywhere, though it goes against the Ts &Cs). This also includes access to ISTA-D for diagnostics and ISTA-P for coding. If the option to encode the anti-dazzle feature is available in ISTA-P then it can be done via remote coding but that would be considered a conversion/retrofit and as such be added to the car's master file on the BMW servers, thus ensuring that any future updates would respect the additional coding.

The curious thing about Bimmer Tech saying their coding can be done is that they are coding modules that have no public software and thus no reference files for settings (decoded CAFD values). It's very likely a hack job which is why the coding has to be reapplied after official updates.

Tempting to get this for that occasion “need.” I’m quite confident there’s some sort of vetting process, but the registration form doesn’t even ask for many details. #PayToPlay

No vetting process at all. Sign up. pay, get access. Like I said, it's technically supposed to be used by USA independent shops but I use it all the time.

So either the VO coding + dealer update the other forum member did actually worked, or he is mistaken/not telling the truth about the light tunneling working …

And interesting - that same guy told me it was supported! But then he just sent me a generic link with my vin on their website

From that guy’s post on the other forum:

“I never actually checked to see if they were working previously.”

Perhaps they didn’t actually code anything or perhaps he doesn’t have what he thinks is anti-dazzle.

So how about this:
- perform the VO coding
- pay BMW for access to the tools
- flash the modules using the tools

Is it possible this will recognize the VO & update the modules as necessary while flashing?
