I ordered a Display Key from an EBAY seller in the US...it should be with me next week sometime.
I have read about this VIN number stuff...and I really can't see why I cant "read" what's on the Display Key Memory (via a Micro USB key) and change it. I might have to use HexaDecimal instead on Binary (and really it shouldn't be too difficult to read on a typical laptop. Sounds techy but should be fairly straightforward...if I succeed, I will post on how to do it)

So thats what I plan to do. And if I "find" a VIN number of sorts, I will replace it with mine...if I don't find one, I will move to program my key using the "key program slot" on the left of my Steering Wheel..

Im am hoping (as I dont have the key yet) that that should work. IF not then I have just spent $330 Aussie Dollars on a trial...and it may turn out to be an expensive mistake. Whatever happens, I will come back and post my findings on here. Might help a few that have been asking about EBAY sellers and not finding much in response.

Nothing much else to do, in this lockdown...

I wonder if the 7-series fob could work with this...

I know it's old message, but just to keep things current I believe the new part number is 66128715617.

If you are asking me, mate....nope. I assumed it would be simple enough to look at the Key and "read" the information on it...but I couldn't. I also removed the battery and tried a reset, but it didnt reset...I wonder if it has a built in quartz battery which I could try and reset...later...

not sure if this was addressed, but it looks like there is a knockoff key that is floating around, so i wonder if you guys are having issues with it because of that fact.

I have 2 DisplayKeys (1 spare), both supplied direct by BMW. Obviously I can only use 1.

I therefore have a spare if anyone in UK wants to buy it.

True.

Should definitely also charge with a standard micro USB cable too.

Unless its faulty/dead.

Correct, but I honestly didn't want to keep a key that didn't charge via USB when I purchased as Brand New. I'll keep looking because like I said I do have the a tech here in South Florida who can code VIN to them.

I still have the display key that came with my M850i which I have since traded in. Can this be recoded and used with another car? If so, it is for sale.

Hi, not to revive an old thread but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem.
My dealership said display key was not an option for my 2015 I8 which has comfort access. Is this just because the option was never selected for North America? I tried telling the dealership parts department that but was told that only the standard pull out key was orderable. Are there certain 2015 cannot be paired with display key?
Thanks!

programming the key

so i have a display key coming for my 2019 i8 through a dealer. When everyone talks about key is coded, does it mean that it will work right out the box or will I need to pair it. If so, how do I pair it.

I received the key today, part number ending in 617. Works right out the box, didn't need the pair it or anything.

You had to order with your VIN number though? so it comes coded from the factory? Otherwise anyone could purchase one and drive off in someone else's car?

Am I the only one who never uses my display key?

I use the standard spare. At least I can open the car with the blade inside if it fails.

Display key is a white elephant in my opinion.

I agree ! Almost completely useless in practice and the dealer told me that when I bought the car . Its too chunky , all the info is essentially available on the phone app and most importantly the need to charge it daily means i leave it in the drawer all the time , and happily use the smaller key set whose battery lasts for months .
If you do not have one , i think you might feel you want one because it looks cool , but ...see above !
