After some research and enlightenment on the part of my selling dealer they have now expressed confidence that the Display Key will, in fact, work in my '19 Roadster. They want to charge me $606 + an additional $165 for an hour of programming + sales tax of course. Evidently no one will sell this item without an in-person visit anymore so getting a discount on this part now seems unlikely.

My question to those that have this already... is it "worth" the nearly $840 charge that I'd be paying? It's quite a handsome key and all and certainly more befitting of a $170k vehicle (more so than the supplied key) and at $450-500 total I'd likely jump on it but at >$800 it's getting significantly harder to justify the expense....

I realize this is completly arbitrary but I'd love to get some feedback from actual owners....

Thanks

You don't actually need it coded, the process is very simple as the key is supplied coded to the car. Given that fact and the money you are spending with them, I would ask them to forego the labor given it takes 10 seconds to hold the key to the correct spot on the dash and pair it to the car!

To answer your question, it probably isn't worth the money, but does that really matter...

So if no coding is necessary why not order it from BMW? Or they make you go to a dealership?

Just curious, does it really work 100%?

For example, does the pre-condition function work?

So you ordered it through a dealership; but you didn't pay for any programming, right?
I guess when they order it they ask for the VIN number?

You usually have to provide your VIN as well as ID to prove ownership of the vehicle that matches the VIN.

Can't quite get a clear answer on getting display key on a 2014. Since 2014 doesn't have comfort access, do I need dealer to install special equipment to get display key to work? If so, then no display key for me as the key itself is quite expensive already.

Well it would appear that BMW has beaten me; I'm throwing in the towel on this whole display-key-thing as every local and semi-local dealer I've dealt with have told me that it either NEEDS to be programmed at the one hour of labor cost or it simply won't work in my vehicle.

My selling dealer is an hour and a half away and they initially confirmed that it WOULD work on my vehcile only to email me today and advise me that when they tried to place the order with BMW they were told it wouldn't work on my car without a "retrofit" which still had to be issued by BMW NA. No one will sell me the stand alone key....

For reference my car is a '19 Roadster produced in 01/2019 so I find the need of any retrofit to be illusory. A subsequent call to the "iSpecialist" that BMW provides the contact number to on their website was a genuine waste of time as all the dude did was refer me to my local parts dept for info. The same parts department that appears to be bewildered by the whole concept of using a displaqy key on a US spec vehicle.

I've never had this much trouble trying to spend over $700 before....

I use mine every time I use the i8. Not essential, but very useful.

The things I use it for most are:

1/ Precondition
2/ Range (to know if I need to refuel ahead of a journey)

The phone app will do neither if the car is in the garage, and if I'm in a nearby shop etc, the app is much slower than the DisplayKey, to precondition.

You don't need a retrofit, and the key will work with your 2019 i8 Roadster. I also have a 2019 i8 Roadster and I ordered the key from my dealer. The key arrived four weeks before my car, and the programming took minutes. My dealer didn't charge for the programming.

I hear ya.... however it would be nice to use the Precondition feature when my car is in the garage. The app fails to work on most occasions...

Oh I believe you are correct however every dealer close to me (including my selling dealer who is 1 1/2 hours away) won't order the part because.... and I quote: "BMW told us that key will not work for your car until they release a retrofit kit for it. My managers did a special request and BMW NA told us they are working on a retrofit kit until then we will not be able to order the display key"
