These How-To videos demonstrate how well thought out iDrive 8 actually is. Can't wait to give it a try when our iX 50 arrives.

Speaking of opening doors, it seems that the electronic door openers would lend themselves more to accidentally opening the doors while driving - noticing also their proximity to the lock/unlock buttons. Is here some sort of lockout feature while moving (other than kiddie locks)?

Don't you use the auto lock? Why do you need to operate the lock/unlock when the car is moving?

I think what the OP is saying is that the electronic unlock button (in lieu of a pull handle) may be pressed accidentally while on the move. My e-tron's pull handle is electronic and while the car is moving, or if it senses traffic coming from behind, the door simply won't unlatch on the first pull. You have to pull it a second time in rapid succession for the door to unlatch. The ambient lighting in the door also flashes red to warn you about oncoming traffic. This operating principle is the same in the IX according to the user manual.

Exactly - got it, thanks! Much easier to press a button than pull a handle (especially one so exposed on the interior door card - taking off a coat, fumbling for a water bottle, intending to press the lock button, or just leaning on the door), so I assumed some sort of safety was built in. Sounds similar to the operation of the rear hatch button on my current X5, which requires a pretty deliberate press to operate, but won't with the car in motion. Good to know.

It almost looks as though they were trying to make a point, like "there's way more configurability here than we could ever do with buttons, unless we made it into a commercial airplane cockpit". I'm not sure all of that is necessary but there's a lot there. Surely they could have had some basic convenience buttons.

True, but better than having to drill down six layers through some GUI.
One swipe down from the top of the screen gets you to the shortcuts.

Shortcuts

Like iDrive 7, iDrive 8 allows for users to swipe downwards from the display or by tiling the iDrive Controller upwards. The fast access menu contains shortcuts and frequently used functions. Users can store their own shortcuts and edit them from the same menu. Radio stations, navigation destinations, phone numbers and links to submenus are among the preferences that can be set as a shortcut. In each case, the type of shortcut is visualized by a symbol in the digital fast access view, so the user can quickly find their way around.
