I've never believed battery powered vehicles are the way forward after reading what production entails. Bio diesel seem much more practical.

The i3 has been a loyal daily driver to compliment my F80 M3 for quite some time now. I've sat in a Volt, a Bolt, an eGolf... they aren't bad, but they don't treat the driver to the same experience as an i3 with the Giga World interior. Is it a rocket like my F80? No, but the instant torque makes it quicker to 30, and in the city that's where it counts. Let me make this clear: I was a doubter too, but the i3 is an absolute pleasure to drive.

Keep in mind that the lease in question is for a 2017 model. Those are all but gone, but when the 2018's showed up, deals were to be had. I'm an opportunist, I got a killer deal on a $50k i3 last year, and if you were lucky enough to get this low a payment on the only consumer level car with a carbon fiber chassis then let me shake your hand.

If, however, you are one of these who scoff at this kind of deal on a very pleasurable driving experience, then salute! Ignorance is bliss! Forget the environment: I'm not paying for gas, I drive in the carpool, my monthly is the price of a nice dinner, and my 40 mile commute is an absolute pleasure.

Clueless.

Clueless.
Based on my own experience I can only second that statement.
For me the linear acceleration and the one pedal driving is the most pleasing aspect. It provides an extremely relaxed driving comfort that no conventional car can offer. It is the perfect futuristic counterpart to my old school Z3 3.0. Both are pure and reduced but so much fun to drive

Bloomberg is turning into a tabloid...

Deals can be had on i3's in mid-$2xx range, a little highers for REX's.
The car is a great commuter ride, and gas savings pay for the cost of lease payment (in my case).

How do you say "no" to a "free" car?

YMMV,

The deal had $13,000 in incentives after negotiated MSRP which was already down to $43,200. Here's my calculation, which comes out to $52/mo

Not that it matters (the actual buyer in the article ended paying more), but:
1). Sales price, magically, is below Invoice, by about $3K. Good luck with that, or add $+125/month.
2). Zero (0) dealer profit. Good luck with that.
3). Need to add doc, title, and finance fees, which the source sited as $1,731. It's actually $1,753 if you sum up all the times listed, so add another +$73/month.
4). $13K in incentives is includes a super-set of MY'17-only and MY'18-only credits:
$7.5K Federal pass-through (legit, all years)
$2.0K Lease cash (MY'17 only)
$2.0K Loyalty credit(MY'18 only) https://www.bmwusa.com/i3-loyalty.html
$1.0K Build out cash for attending an "event" (???)
$500 Fleet discount (legit, all years)
Any monthly payment can be made sufficiently close to $0.00, when you start prepaying for something upfront. Generally, that is an undesirable approach, as getting the car written off as an insurance loss, will also write-off the non-refundable down-payment.

I've said this myself, this deal is long gone. You won't get this on any MY18s for now, but you could have at the beginning of the year for the outgoing 17s. $13k off MSRP? Yes, I've done it. Is it hard? Yes. Is it impossible? No. I'm paying less than $200 for my i3 Rex including tax zero down. That does not mean the i3 isn't selling well, or is being given away because it's a poor selling car etc, but deals CAN be made because they aren't really flying off the lot for $50K+. That's just the reality.

What do you think is a realistic deal on a 18 lease? If I can get one for 0 down 200-250 a month I'd probably get one for the wife to dd. What's the current range on the 2018's?

Depends on options you want and what state you're in. Maybe you could get a stripper model for $280-$325. Loaded i3s would be around $500 with no money down.

There are no "deals" on new at the moment.

You're not going to find anything for that cheap right now. There are no deals on the 2018s currently.
