1) While he agrees it would be nice to have some of the disabled features, a certain number of them have been disabled in order to meet compliance with the Department of Transportation in the US.
2) Coding will void the warranty. He pointed out, using my case as an example, had I brought my vehicle in and if it was determined to have been coded, I would be responsible for the entire cost of replacing the instrument cluster for the i8 (my instrument cluster was recently replaced under warranty due to false remote readouts and its failure to reprogram).
3) They can detect coding when vehicles come in for servicing (They haven't performed this via remote, thus far).
Number 2 is not true. It just isn't. Just trust me on this. It is not an "automatic void on warranty"

yw -- I spoke to my dealer about it, too, after my friend at BMW NA told me it was a dealer-by-dealer determination. My dealer told me as long as the re-coding didn't affect a functioning system it was OK. It might get coded out at a service but it wouldn't void the warranty.

In addition, under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act BMW would have to prove a re-coding affected a particular system so as to cause a warranty issue.

Good to know. Sounds like I need to find a reasonable dealer if coding is contemplated.

Who/where is your dealer and what relationship do you have with that dealer?

BMW Concord.

My SoCal car broker was able to secure an i8 through BMW Concord and that's how ended up with them.

Beyond that, no BMW established contacts to speak of.

Was looking for info on coding i8s , and wow what a thread I found!
Surprised to hear all the controversy about coding.

So, just to add my 2 cents...coded all my previous bimmers myself. Very easy process actually. I've had many visits to dealers for everything from scheduled maintenance to electronic malfunctions to repairs from accidents. Never had a dealer make an issue about my car having been coded. Worst case scenario is when they have to reset the software, then you lose all your coding mods.

And I absolutely love having the coding options.

I hope coding the i8 is the same process as other BMWs.
Well I hope I get my i8 soon!

thanks for the info.
Is it the same software...Esys?

Also, just curious...is there an accessible fusebox? If so where is it? Would want to fuse tap to power radar detector and blackvue cameras.

I became an enthusiastic convert to coding. The things we can code are fairly mild and don't affect the warranty. But they do add some convenience and information. (For both my i8 and my M4.)

Has anyone compiled an "option list" of things you can activate on the i8?

I found a cheat sheet at bmwesys.com that claims to be I12 specific. If you google "bmw coding i12" it's the second result. I don't have my car yet so I don't know if it's accurate.

I had my i3 coded over 6 months ago with no issues, and just had my i8 coded last week to do the following:
1. Fold in side mirrors when car is locked.
2. Raise or lower the windows with the key fob
3. Enable AM radio
4. Bypass the "confirm" button
