I ordered in December 2014. One dealer advised that it would be 12-18 months to get delivery. I then went to a dealer where I have purchased 2 XKRs who is also a BMW i8 dealer. Originally he said Sept. Then an allocation for March build became available due to cancellation and knowing I really wanted it in Spring, gave it to me.

Good to see that we have plenty of i8 owners now that have driven or own other sports car, or GTs....the i8 is truly different and exciting, and for the people who really understand what the car is about, there is no comparison to an M car, or a Tesla, or or or or....
It is unique and finally something from BMW that is different and not another M car, or another M performance offering that is just not that exciting to the BMW (M) enthusiast IMHO. |

i8 fuel economy
A) which cars ever make the OEM claimed numbers in "real life"? B) how close you get depends on what your real life looks like. C) I got my i8 a little over two months ago, and I'm doing quite well: 3.9 l/100km on average, which translates to over 72 mpg. My daily commute is about 2.3-2.4l/100km, over 120 mpg.

Overall Car Of The Year 2014
Quote:
btw, if anyone has got the Awards Edition of Top Gear magazine, they will see that long term results on the SAME car that Clarkson drove has given them 45mpg and even their small fuel tank car "will happily do 350 miles" in their words. Well worth buying that edition. Nice write up Oh, and the i8 is Top Gear magazine's OVERALL CAR OF THE YEAR 2014 |

I am so glad to see many i8 owners are experiencing the car the same way as I am, as something completely different from the pure electric or pure performance axis. I still don't think I fully understand it's dynamics yet.... |

Not in any way comparable to the i8 though, and I fail to see any logic in threads comparing Tesla S cars with i8. |

It allows Tesla owners to troll.

Reality, however, is that most of us spend the majority of our motoring hours with imposed limits, on crowded roads, going through cities with moms and baby strollers crossing the roads. And suddenly, mileage becomes the only meaningful thing to strive for. Because there is no point in big brabbly engines, wheel-spinning acceleration, and high-speed road holding. No fun there. Once you do get a chance to enjoy your car, though, I'm with you. And that's the beauty of the i8. It can do both. Which other car can? |

Gas mileage is going to become more important as manufacturers meet future CAFE standards. Hybrids are currently the best way to do that for companies such as Ferrari and Porsche, hency their very expensive hybrids which, presumably, will lead to less expensive hybrids over the next decade.

If you're waiting for a perfected product, you'll find yourself in the middle of the bell curve. That's fine, of course. But some of us get a kick out of being ahead of that curve, even if it comes at the price of some imperfections. |

Ok enough bantering you two.
On to serious business. I like my M3, but I am considering trading it in for an i-8. I 'think' I need practicality, but that may be past history as my three older sons are out of the nest. I do have a 2.5 year old to contend with, so child seat is a reality. Plus the occasional chicken feed. And I would love to carry windsurfers on the roof. Once a month long distance (1k miles) trip. I am a bit uncomfortable with the 'attention' my YMB M3 gets, so it would be gray/gray for the i-8. Is the i-8 a reasonable choice? Thanks for advice!

Why in the world would you want an M car that burns a fortune in gas money stop-and-going through Zurich traffic? |

Because I don't live in Zurich (thank god) or Geneva. But in a more rural area, where I can actually drive my cars on nice country roads, the speed limits are still the same but we don't have speed cameras and patrol cars every 5 meters.
