Real world eDrive range lower than expected

I've had my Sophisto Grey i8 for a week now and have been a bit disappointed in the range in eDrive

Charged up last night and managed 7 to 8 miles this morning before it showed that 0 miles remain.

Ambient temperature is hovering around -1/ 0 degrees. Charged from household plug (UK)

Still waiting for my wall box installation.

When I got in the car this morning the meter read around 16 miles. Real world use was 8 miles.

Any of you experience anything similar? Should I take this back to the dealer or does the home charge unit not fully charge as much as the Mennekes units?

As an aside any London i8 owners fancy meeting up in the spring to share stories, etc. I'd like to see peoples faces with a few of these whispering down the street!!!

Cheers

My real world EV range (driving normal, not "hypermiling") when I took delivery was around 12-13 miles, that was at around 20C. Other manufacturers state batteries are about 70% as efficient at freezing as they are at "comfortable ambient temps" so 7-8 miles would make sense.

Carac's experience is quite similar to mine. All EV's suffer from this battery deficiency due to changes in temperature. Not really advertised, but almost common knowledge...

Have you compared with/without heating, (incl seat heating, window heating) to see how much is down to that?

It looks to be becoming a very expensive gimmick for BMW and they need to look back at petrol BMW's not battery.

I disagree and, more importantly, so does BMW. BMW is committed to the future and the future ain't gasoline/petrol.

Better batteries, faster charging and increasing gas prices (inevitable when the Saudis lose in their attempt to kill off shale oil producers) will lead, eventually, to all electric cars. And then someone will come up with a new technology and all of the former gas stations, now charging stations, will have to re-gear for the new technology.

But the reciprocating petroleum-fueled motor engine is a obsolescent

If you are correct then you are to early buying the i8 as for the next while gas will be cheap and charging the battery is slow.

I had an i3 for two days I did like the shape and doors and BMW does have a nice looking cars with both the i3 and i8 but the i3 needs better front seats and better riding suspension compared to other BMW cars.

That's very presumptuous of you to say. I'm not going to live as long as you, Kiwi, so I bought my i8 just in time. And in Sport mode the i8 battery charges very quickly. But you didn't know that, because you haven't driven one. You are just quick to condemn and criticize. In ignorance.

No I didn't know the i8 had sports mode this is good news. I'm waiting to have a drive of the i8 as I've only taken out for a couple of days the i3. I'm not condemning the i8 and haven't driven just with our free world able to cast my views just like you. Let me know if I'm wrong and i'll be first to change my views.

It is great to see you enjoying middle age but don't think old think young.

You're wrong. Consistently. You ponitifcate and generalize your New Zealand experience to the rest of the world.

I guess that's what happens when you're upside down.

Lol, now who's ignorant?

Kiwi I think one of the points MalibuBimmer is making is that even though other means of powering our transportation other than combustion engines may be the future (for many reasons) it isn't necessarily the only reason to purchase an i8 to begin with. There are lots of advantages of the EV tech coming to use in the i8 but for me first of all it is a really cool car overall and it just happened to be using "green tech" (which was one reason but not the primary reason for purchasing one). I compare the electric side of the i8 more like how it's used in vehicles such as Porsche 918, Acura NSX, LaFerrari, etc.

For me the i8 is the love child of BMW's R&D and their vision for the future, almost like being able to drive a concept car.

If I wanted a car to be driven purely as an EV I probably would have looked at Tesla since it (at least recently) without doubt has the best range of all consumer EV's available.

Remember, peoples opinions are just that; opinions.
