Be carful with the dealer and updates!

So I took my i3 in last week for an SOS button issue where it stopped working.

They updated all the modules and also updated the software and over wrote all my coding.

Now after getting the car back. Coded all my options back but one I found was different.

The option to make my fuel tank read the full amount of 2.4 gallons vs the 1.9 gallons here in the USA was removed and now I can't get that option to work.

It's always reading the 1.9 gallons. No matter what I try it won't accept the new size and will only ever give me the 1.9 gallon tank!

So be weary of those software updates!

Unless someone knows a workaround ! Lol. Sucks!

Why do they short you on the fuel tank reading anyway?
Now I have to go take a look at mine.
Thanks for the post!

I believe that this was a thing with the early REx cars, because (probably California) required that the REx have less range on gasoline than battery to qualify as a something-or-other category of vehicle. BMW set a software limit to only let 1.9 gallons out of the 2.4 gallon tank for all USA-spec cars, rather than make new 1.9 gallon fuel tanks for our market.

IIRC, the need for this ended with the first battery capacity increase, because the battery range was more than the 2.4 gallon fuel range.

Of course, I may be wrong about all of this, since I don't own a REx.....

It's the "BEVx" (Battery Electric Vehicle with Range Extender) category. No gas engine until the battery is "substantially depleted" (which to BMW means 'about 6.5% remaining') and the gas tank can't provide more miles than the battery.

I wonder how BMW figured that 'about 6.5%' was the right amount of depleted to be 'substantial'. Maybe it was a nice even 4 Ah on a 60 Ah battery (6.66%). Maybe it was 1.2 kWh on the 18.8 kWh net capacity of the 60 Ah battery (6.38%) or 1.4 kWh on the 21.6 gross capacity of the 60 Ah battery (6.48%). Maybe it was some number of kilometers, like 9 (6.9% of the rated 130 km range).

I can't believe that they can do such a thing. Thanks for the heads up.
