Well what range did you expect from a plug in hybrid (the i8 is not an EV!) without making the sacrifice of even heavier batteries?!

I think the combination of electric range/fuel consumption, weight and performance (E92 M3 level) make the i8 a great package.
Obviously CFRP and battery technology will come at a "decent" price.

It seems to be an awesome looking car, and it is so much lighter than the Tesla S. That MPG*performance figure is simply astonishing. Performance/price maybe not so much (perhaps outside USA?)... Performance/total cost of ownership - well who knows...

BTW

Is this the first BMW where DSC cannot be fully turned OFF?
I assume that the rear diff is open? Is it an e-diff like in a normal 3-series?
Is it possible to decouple the front engine entirely for drifting in some kind of sport mode?

Quote: The push button-activated Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) system raises the DSC thresholds, allowing some controlled drive wheel slippage for easier start-off on snow or loose ground, or for extra-dynamic cornering.

You forgot to read yes, actually its 35 km's or roughly 22 miles.

Over here in Belgium I know someone who has owned Jags for the past 20 years or so, the last two being XK8s. Then the government decided to tax any car that emits over 150g of CO2/km to death, meaning the XK would've cost him €18.000 extra over the next two years (when it would be due for replacement). He now drives a 163hp XF 2.2D. Same story with my neighbour, who dreamt of owning a 911 all his life, only to have to park it in storage after a year because it just costs too much. It's the reason why you can buy a 148hp 518d and a 4-cylinder S-class in Europe.

Now imagine all those fairly well-off but not exactly filthy rich executives who can't afford a 911/6er/SL/XK anymore, being offered something like an i8. It's around their price range, they can justify it as a company car, it sets them apart from all the middle managers in their diesel wagons and offers enough range to get them to their weekend resort near the coast and back. I think that is exactly the crowd BMW could be catering for.

Love this car

i8 may not be the fastest but who honestly who uses all the performance of a supercar. Unless they take it to the track then they mostly buy for the looks.

Performance is better than an E46 M3, which is plenty quick for most of us.

Its the looks though, this car will stop traffic. Its beautiful on a general supercar level, it looks from the future more than any car I've seen and if you want to be looked at in your car (which a lot of guys on this forum do) then its better than any car on sale in this price bracket.

I love it and wish I could afford one.

Good power to weight ratio. But my question is: Will it drift? And I'm serious about this.

Exactly!

BMW i8 prototype First drive review here: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...t-drive-review

" it immediately dispelled any lingering doubts about its ability to deliver truly engaging driving traits. It is extremely agile, with somewhat light but extremely direct electro-mechanical steering. You can sense the low centre of gravity in the way the futuristic looking coupé enthusiastically turns in to corners. Its dynamic properties are characterised by an inherent responsiveness, nimbleness and light-footedness to the handling, which immediately stands out as one of the new car’s strengths."

"Buyers will be able to order more conventional 20in alloy wheels with wider 215/45 (front) and 245/40 (rear) profile rubber"

Numbers good and performance , advanced design wow!!
But thin rims 195 front and 215 rear.
The i8 need tires more wide 225 or 245.

just wait till the aftermarket picks one up and slaps the s63 in it

I would rather see it with a much smaller battery, more to the gas/electric side of the scale rather than plug-in.

Its a beautiful car and a great step in the right direction by BMW of eco friendly sports cars, but the price??? I know its speculation but how can they justify this costing more than an m3 or the new m4

Autocar BMW i8 prototype first drive review here: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...t-drive-review

"Driven here for the first time in prototype form, the low slung coupé is planned to go on sale in the UK next April at a price that will, BMW officials hint, pitch it into direct competition with the conspicuously more conventional Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, which retails here for £87,959 (approx $136,000)." "Porsche 911 Carrera 4S versus BMW i8 coupé? Old world versus new world. Expect it to be one of next year’s most anticipated comparison tests."

I wish BMW had a car like this now as I just picked up a 911 due to the fact that bmw ran out of cars that I can obtain.

I have owned:

F01 750
F12 650
E92 ///Lime Rock Park
(Was not interested in the Fxx M6 as its more of a GT car)

The above we're all 2012 or 2013 MY..

I highly considered an R8 but could not get passed the AUDI badge. (Personal issues )

Now, I am in love with this car -

The rumor mill is that an ///M8 version is in the works with 600+ hp. (Scott26 can you validate ?)

If true, sign me up right now at any price point...

I guess I'll have to live with the 991 for the time being,
Here she is..

I certainly hope future i-vehicles (i4 and i5 have been talked about) does not use the i8 as basis but rather the i3 or derivative.

I consider the i3 to be the new thing here.

BMW Three Cylinder with Twin Power Turbo.
In the i8 the three cylinders output is direct only to the i8 and is more powerful than the conventional three cylinder that will appear in the next generation MINI.

The i8 retains true elements of a sports car. Low , sleek , wide and stunning appearance. Underneath arises the birth of a new type of sports car, one with no equal. There will never be a car like the i8 or even drives like the i8 on the road anytime soon.

The Tesla comparison is fair when you consider the exclusive brand for only EVs.
But as pointed out against the many who compared the i3 to the Tesla Model S.
There are no direct rivals for these vehicles yet.

The BMW i3 is a MegaCity vehicle for urban environments.
The BMW i8 is an opportunity to open a new book on a sports car . It illustrates how to do things differently but retain the purpose of a sports car.

Progressive , Cutting edge , Individual and precise on every level best sum up the BMW i8.

I really wonder if everybody who is disappointed in the performance figures of the i8, really expected BMW i to launch a super sports car. Not BMW, but BMW i, the sub brand for sustainable mobility...
The i8 is a sustainable, eco friendly take on a sports car. Not a McLaren MP4-12C super sport killer.
