I understand that looks can be subjective, and blah blah blah, some will like it others don't, but when I read stuff like "there are sooooooooo many choices in this price range" I'm left wondering what type of box I live in to not know about all these choices. All I can think of is the Tesla model S, and that is pretty much it. Market competition is a good thing. Hopefully more manufacturers will start bringing new and exciting hybrid sports/luxury vehicles.

That Audi thing looks like a VW corrado!

Seriously though, I love the i8, it's a great car and if I was very rich I would buy one.... I just can't help think that people are not going to appreciate BMWs philosophy on this, and at this stage, it feels like they've been too clever for their own good.

I bet those door sills won't be a problem due to the way the doors open - you step right in, not swoop in like a normal car.

Overall, this car is a WIN!!

If I had a lot of money I would def by this car. Although its different than the tesla model S I can't help but compare the 2 because on a day to day basis I would barely use gas and Since I don't have kids the sports car thing also fits me better.

Damn it now I'm also one of those idiots comparing apples with oranges lol

I get all the hate this car is getting. The typical attributes that car enthusiast are looking for are missing with this car: power, looks (objective), practicality, perceived value for money. And I get that. This car tries very hard to redefine what a super car should be like. Personally, I think supercars should be wall poster material first, then driveability, then practicality, in that order. But I kind of get what BMW is doing with the i8. And for that, I respect it, and actually want this car.

The i8 is a light, electric sports car that still has the important BMW DNA of strong RWD bias with 50/50 weight distribution. I see this as a souped-up electric go kart. Is that wrong? For the price, many say yes, it's just highway robbery. Me, I see it as a departure from how every other exotic car maker is developing economical super cars.

From what I've seen around, many of these 'hybrid supercars' have giant engines mated to some electric generator powered by heavy batteries. How do you compensate for the loss of performance for the weight of the batteries? More power, which is why giant engines exist in the first place. These cars will go fast from a standstill and in a straight line, and with clever chassis dynamics, can go fast in a corner. They try to find as many clever ways of removing weight, including uses of exotic materials like carbon fiber and titanium. But is this the only formula for performance? BMW doesn't think so.

Think of the Lotus Elise and Arial Atom. These are very much lightweight sports cars that have very dynamic performance. These machines reward the driver with the pure enjoyment of owning the road. These cars flatter the drivers by giving them driving abilities that mainly come from the cars' awesome performance. And I think this is where the i8 is going. Granted, what BMW has done to get these results are a bit expensive, but they've done so much innovative research to do this that the cost needs to be recuperated somehow. Who would've thought a hybrid electric sports car can weight less than 1500kg? All I know is that I can get as much, if not better, economy than an Prius and still enjoy driving it. Sign me up.

The Audi literally crapped all over this ...
As in, they took a giant dump with that thing!

Man, goes to show, just sticking a huge engine into a car isn't everything.

If you want ultimate performance, get a GT-R.

From a unique perspective, the i8 is in a league of its own and this Audi concept isn't even memorable. The i8 is a car ahead of its time, and that is what's exciting about it to me. It is a mold of the dream I had as a little kid about the future cars... Yeah, it doesn't fly (I mean, literally, it's not a flying car) but it sure as hell looks the part.

Oh and I was riding my bike the other day and came up on this car, was wondering if it was a new Hyundai or a Kia .. On closer inspection, it was a Tesla. Enough said on that comparison.

I for one believe the i8 is going to be an exemplary showcase of "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Maybe its not designed to be... But those sills all but negate the i8's ability to be a comfortable daily driver. Dealing with their girth is only part of the obstacle; having to raise your body over them from the seated position is what can leave bruises.

Disagreed. Id rather have a fisker with no warranty than this monstrosity.

Prediction - i8 will fail miserably.

Looks great! Interior is perfect except for 1 thing: the carry-over beer tap shifter?? Why bother? Just go straight to a "PRND" button system and skip the faux "shifter". This is an electric car and its time to move to a newer method of "motion selection". Or better how about "forward" and "reverse". When you shutdown it parks. (Or how about Siri controlled? J/K)
Are we just stuck on some notion that we are still "shifting" and just need a place to put our hand? Kill the "beer tap" BMWAG! Show us the next gen way to "engage motion".

the audi doesn't look good, but 700hp and 590 ft/lbs while getting 94mpg destroys the i8

The i8 looks very very interesting. The design harks back to some Bangle-era days (some of my favourite BMW designs), and the interior is very futuristic and awkward---possibly even overstyled; but it works! I think the i8 has the potential to be a game changing sports car.

the Audi is indeed very disappointing. The 2010 Sport quattro concept was amazing with its 5-cylinder turbo and lightweight construction. This 'new' Sport quattro concept weighs 4100 pounds and is based on the A6 platform. It is HUGE. More like a Bentley Jr. than an Audi Sport quattro. Not good.

I still can't stand the iPad on the dash look of the iDrive screen. It's so out of place.
