Question Cracked Windshield

I'm currently looking at my options for replacement.

It looks like aftermarket glass is around $500. (I have HUD)
(they are saying its OEM without the bow logo...same manufacturer )

I would like oem glass and the service dept. quoted me around $1300 just for parts. Sensors, seals etc.

Should I use my insurance $500 deductible and try to get oem replacement?
Should I try to buy the BMW Ultimate Protection Service?

What did you guys do for your cracked windshield?

Dealers typically outsource this work so I would go the OE not the OEM route with your insurer.

OE : company who made your windshield.
OEM : company who, in the past, has made windshields for BMW but not your windshield.

So here's what you need to do.

1.) Never get non OE glass. that crap they sell from safelite is utter garbage and it only lasts 1 year of highway driving. it's no where near the specifications of OE auto glass. after 1 year you'll have millions of sand chips making the glass have a white haze and hard to see through, blinding in direct sun... it's all scam glass designed to keep you having to replace it ever year or two... just like monroe mufflers made out of 2 sheets of aluminum foil
2.) ALWAYS use the insurance and get BMW original glass... depending on your insurance company, they may fight you on it... but don't back down.. all german cars qualify for true OE glass.. it's substantially more and you get the right glass and quality that will last many years.
3.) you'll need to tell the dealer you want the REAL glass, and have them order it. might take a week or two to get it but worth the wait. You have to be EXPLICIT with the dealer, or they will just charge you a crap ton and have safelite come out. It MUST have the BMW logo's and everything.
4.) carry your receipt in case you get pulled over for cracked glass. most police will let you off if you show the glass is on order.
5.) if the dealer will let you buy and use the BMW warranty - well do that!

Oh and BTW - Glass doesn't have a deductible - should be 100% covered. This usually goes on your insurance as a "mark" but won't increase your rates, but if you try to switch insurance companies they might see it as a small claim. if falls off after 5 years.

I had to pay 100$ deductible but for sure go through insurance unless your deductible is crazy high. Don't get XYG, it cracked in just a few weeks by itself, stress crack, totally ridiculous and also made my rain sensor not work. Ended up getting OEM and no more prbs, back to new.

Alfredo's AutoGlass in Corona...worth the drive. He is a genius and a perfectionist. BMW OEM glass and installation was simple (90 minutes). Call your auto insurance company before hand.

His wife will make the appointment. Just provide the VIN for the correct OEM auto glass and rubber moulding p/n's to order. She might know the insurance details.

I think my M3 glass was $800 installed. It is half the price from the BMW stealership.

In California, the deductible depends on your insurance policy. Some have zero. We have $1000. A broken windshield is not considered an accident and is not on your driving record.

also if you through insurance, depending on how everything is processed... your carfax may end up showing "accident or damage, small repairs" etc etc.... that would be my single biggest concern if resale value was something i cared about.

What dealers have you asked? noticed you were in LA. down in SD the costs is 800-900 total for parts/labor to get windshield replaced

yeah you should be able to get a much lower quote else where. The genuine BMW glass retails for about 500 but can be sourced for lower. I have 2 BMW dealers near me all quoted under 900 for install so you should be able to find something comparable

Windshield replacement is sham these days, and has been written about repeatedly on this site.

Carmakers are thinning glass to reduce weight and cost to achieve emissions and fuel economy targets. No matter how strong the glass is, thinner means much more susceptible to cracks. Read about thickness to the third power. The consumer takes it in the shorts, again.

Insurers know this and outsource glass claims to a third party clerical service.

Dealers know this and outsource glass replacement to a third party glass shop.

The consumer is left in between five parties (carmaker, dealer, insurer, clerical service and glass shop) to deal with the mess. And it's far more frequent than ever, because of thinner glass.

Read the M-B site on the W222 S-Class section. No brands or models are exempt.

Edit: insist on OEM glass. The clerical processing company will squawk but don't take no for an answer. The third party glass shop will likely need to make a trip to the dealer for camera calibration. That's what both my wife (her X3) and I (my M-B) did.

We did a replacement and went with OE glass because of the rain sensor and second party mfg were not making a good replacement. The dealer did the work and was willing to drop the cost a bit to match the insurance.

The crack was from a rock chip during the summer. That the winter I watched the windshield crack propagate in 30 seconds.

FYI, if you want the insurance to pay for the windshield at the BMW dealer, pay for it in full yourself then submit a claim and have the insurance reimburse you. They will have to reimburse you in full no matter the dollar amount.

Otherwise, if you submit a claim before repair, they will send you to a 3rd party repair shop or if you insist on going to the BMW dealer, the insurance will play hardball with the dealer and say they will only pay $xxx amount (probably half of what the dealer is asking) which the dealer will refuse and you will get nowhere for weeks.

Or you just explain to potential buyer what happened with proof of receipt for work done. PPI should further verify the condition. Not really a concern unless you don't know how to figure these things out on your own

Pilkington without the BMW logo will be the exact same as the OE glass.

You just don't have to pay the BMW licensing fee, by cutting out a middle man.

Interesting to hear so many people recommending the OE glass at the dealership. Is this to avoid issues with the HUD and wiper sensors?

When I owned my E46, the recommendations and my personal experience were the exact opposite. The windshields from the factory were really soft and would chip/pit VERY easily. Mercifully, mine cracked one winter due to a rock strike from a tractor and was replaced. The aftermarket glass from the windshield replacement place looked nearly new after five years while the original glass was so pitted you almost couldn't see through it after three.

Most insurance cos. prefer to try to repair before replacing. Mine does it for free. Unless you have a preferred glass shop, the insurance co. will steer you to the one they use (often Safelite as they do the work for less cost to the insurance co.).
