I4 M50 or e40 M Sport

Hi
I am just jumping in here from the X1 forum (wife has an X1 30e) and previously I was on the M2 forum.

I am UK based and thinking of moving away from my Taycan after 3+ years and the only other EV I like is the i4. I will be definitely be sticking with electric.

I like BMWs and would be more than happy to get back into one.
The Taycan is great to drive, but has too many issues (all expensive to fix). It's like dating an attractive girl who you suspect may turn into a crack addict.

But I know very little about the i4 and was wondering on the general concensus of which model to go for?

I know the 50 has lower range but more performance than the 40.

Any input appreciated - including pointers to reviews etc.

I saw a dark green M50 and really, really like that colour!

For me personally the 40 has plenty of power and I love that it's RWD. I also didn't get the Msport pkg, just the stock 18" wheels (that can be rotated for longer tread life).

After driving a 2024 M50 service loaner in San Remo Green the wife fell in love with it. Today we picked up her 2025 M50 in Vegas Red. Fantastic car!! We don't need the range as it's just for local driving. But for us the performance is a must.

Been a BMW of Minnetonka fan here for years. But I've heard good things about MW as well. Congrats!

Similar car choices! My wife has the iX1 30.

I've had my M50 for 10 months now and very happy with it. When I was choosing the spec, the 40 didn't allow me to chose the colour / leather combo I wanted and I think a couple of other options. When I also fully spec'd them, the price difference wasn't that great.

A friend had the M50 with the 20" wheels and warned me of the range impact, so opted for the 19" standard wheels which does appear to make a c.50 mile range improvement. I can comfortably get 270 miles range when the temp is over 15 C.

I regularly use it to tow a horse trailer, so range is really important as when towing, you lose about 40% of the range!

Given the towing through fields is a fairly regular occurrence, 4WD was a must too.

Thanks! I've purchased from both for years. There was only one 2025 available in town at the time and happened to be at MW 😊

Thankyou for all the responses so far.

I will carry on learning about the car before I commit to anything.

I am edging toward the M50 I think.

I had noticed the quoted range difference between the 19 and 20" wheels.
Its a big difference.

Do the figure seem correct?

I would probably prefer 19" anyway from personal experience.
Bit more comfort and lower cost replacement tyres.

On a side issue, which packs / options are seen as essential (UK)?

And what choices are there for parking assistant etc?
My Taycan is awful to park (visibility and reversing are awful) and it wouid be a nightmare on UK roads / car parks without surround cameras. How's the i4?

Any help greatly appreciated.

The c.50 mile range difference does seem correct from my real world experience with a friend who has the 20". Could be a bit less, but if you consider the winter months where consumption increases, it's significant.

I use the all round cameras a lot when parking and have done in various cars for years. Probably could live without it, but when I ordered 13m ago, it was part of the Tech Plus pack which I wanted with the Driving Assist Pro.

I also got the Comfort Pack as wanted the comfort access.

Visibility pack I also have, but I'd say this is one you could drop if not bothered for the matrix style lights.

Sunroof is nice, but it does suffer from creaking. I have some stuff I apply to the rubber seals to stop it, but could be annoying for some.

Thanks for that.....
Helps me with my selection a lot.

Definitely not bothered about any sunroof / pano roof.
Laser lights would be useful on country lanes nearby.
Not too bothered about Comfort Access.
Would like Surround cams, unless it's easy to park?
Defo prefer 19" wheels now.

The 19" vs 20" is overvlown and it's the fact that the 20" wheels come with gumballs and the 19" wheels do not.

Once the 20" tires wear go to a Conti DWS 06 plus. A great all weather tire.

So decision now made.

Found a near new M50 at a BMW dealers with just about the spec I want.
The test drive gave me a huge grin in Sport mode.

Agreed p/x and picking up soon.

Thanks for all the input and look forward to being part of the forum.

Great discussion! I actually started looking into the i4. My wife is also driving the iX1… while I have a 330i touring (F31).

I spent some time on the configurator and ended up with i4 xDrive40 M Sport instead of M50 due to power & range balance.

The i4 does offer a lot of great exterior & interior combinations. Fire / Vegas Red looks stunning in person, but Tanzanite Blue or San Remo Green are closely behind.

Btw: BMW Visualizer offers some interesting individual paints for the i4 like this Frozen Aquamarine Metallic.
