BMW i8 2019 charging issues

Hi all,

BMW i8 bought in August 2023 had suddenly stopped charging from the mains a few weeks ago. Tried different charges and the same thing. The car charges whilst being driven just not through a cable charger. Booked into BMW main dealers and after 1 week diagnosing, they produced the following quote for nearly €14k. I know it's a main dealer but this is a horrendous cost for a under 5 year old car. Does this look right and are all these parts necessary?

Garage List
2015 BMW i8  [10.00]
1970 Porsche 914-6  [0.00]
2018 BMW i3s REx  [0.00]
Who knows?
I’d get a second opinion from another BMW dealer or independent shop that has access to BMW support.

"... stopped charging from the mains a few weeks ago"

-Does that mean that there's error message at the dash? Something like "Unable to charge. Mains power too low" or something?

8 years is battery warranty. Here in Europe the consumer is in ... how to say it right, in much weaker position than in continent US.

No "lemon laws", no "buy back laws" etc.

First of all - visit any indy BMW shop and ask them to read error codes and then post it here. In your invoice BMW stated to replace electric engine which doesn't make much sense since it works and even charges when you drive. Most likely it could be some tiny issue, but you just need to read out error codes.

they want to replace Electric motor electronics, not the motor. Regardless, it is a curious diagnosis. The evidence suggests problems w the charging system, not the motor.

And 19% VAT !

Either way - read out codes before anything you do. It might be some sensor that messes up

I strongly agree with the previous replies that charging issues from the outlet has nothing to do with motor electronics whatsoever. The only things to check are the outlet charging paths to the battery. This includes the wall adapter, the car charging port socket, the wires from the socket to the on board AC/DC converter, and the AC/DC converter itself, and the wires from the AC/DC converter to the battery.

Having said the above, it is highly unlikely the wires are broken. The more likely issue is your wall charging device or the socket. The next likely issue is the AC/DC converter but that is extremely remote as it is normally designed to have more than 50K hours of lifetime usage (meaning it will last for decades)
