BMW European Delivery Programs

Just wondering if anyone went through a BMW European Delivery to pick up their i8. Have read some blogs for other BMW models, but no i8. Any comment appreciated.

Plugs used in Europe and the US are different. BMW won't deliver an American car there. Even though the i8 can be charged without being plugged in.

Thanks. As I live in Switzerland the plug standard is not an issue.

You may be able to arrange a pick up at the factory. But if you drive across the border, you may have all the hassle of importing the car, registering it in Switzerland, etc.

Not sure if that would be called "European Delivery Program", as that usually involves flights, arranged tours, and the dropping off of the car again for shipment.

Talked to my dealer today and he said that BMW charges 1'000CHF (approximately 1'000 US$) for personally picking up a BMW in München. He also mentioned that obtaining temporary number plates, importing the car and paperwork at customs is quite a hassle. I will skip this option and decided for a more traditional car delivery. Ordered today and should get it in about 8 weeks. The good news is that starting March 2016 the i8s can be ordered with the smart/display key. Cost: 435CHF (approximately 435 US$).

I've imported classic cars into Switzerland by driving across the border myself. And it really is a major pain in the neck.

Will check with my dealer again if they know anything more about getting the key for already delivered cars.

Key is a no cost option in the UK interesting though if it is just that to retrofit many owners will go for it.

Fortunately mine will get it fitted free in April, picking the car up this Thursday Ionic Silver with Laser lights and Carbon trim, thursday night will be a trip onto Dartmoor to see how good those lights are (in car video to follow)
