Question regarding i8 key fob

Hi guys,

To the owners of i8, does your i8 key fob look like this attachment or is this just the prototype key design? I went to a local NZ dealer and the key they showed me didn't have the digital touch pad like the one pictured. It looks more like flat card style. Thanks for your help.

Nope, they have the same key as the i3, just different buttons. Nothing special apart from a normal BMW key than the materials used.

The shape is different. It's like the standard BMW key has been flattened and spread out a little.

Yeah but still, ask anyone at BMW right now about a DisplayKey and they would probably deny it ever existing, "I'm quite sure I have no idea what you're talking about."

It probably is hiding in the same place as adaptive headlights, seat memory, adaptive cruise control...

Didn't I read somewhere here that when it was shown it was rather a large contraption?

The display key has been discussed by BMW in the past, and the Pebble Beach car had it (and laser lights). That key requires reprogramming of the car to send data to the key rather than (or in addition to) the BMW server. I wonder if that's a hang up.

While it is a very cool looking keyfob, I don't see how it provides any additional functionality that the iRemote App doesn't already do? I'd rather be able to lock/unlock/start my car with my Apple Watch/iPhone and not have to even carry a keyfob at all anymore.

If it works, you don't have to go through the BMW server to get information from the key. A few months ago the server was down. And there will be places where the car can't connect to the Internet, but it can communicate directly with the fob thing. I would also suspect that there is more functionality but don't know that for sure.

The current i App is nice but it has many shortcomings.

(My genius thinks he found out why I was getting bounced off and had to re log in every friggin day. The fingerprint touch feature was leading to those log outs, so I disabled it and haven't had a problem since.)

Wonder if it's an isolated incident. Touch ID has worked seamlessly for my apple i devices (except for one time incident involving a BMW app update that prevented me from logging in). Have you tried deleting the app and performing a re-install?

My iPhone 5s has been doing the same since last upgrade (irritating) but it is random enough that I do not know what triggers it. Will definitely try turning off touch ID.

I know the six plus won't fit in the little "phone holder" with the USB plug for MMI, but how about the six? I can barely get the 5s to fit in there and close the cover with a short flexible cable.

Anyone got an ETA for the Display Key? I am definitely getting one.

There is no doubt it is coming, as it is standard equipment on the new 7 series.

You still have to carry the key. It has to be inside the car in order for it to start - and outside if you don't want the car to be driven off by just anyone....
