Broken rear shock absorber

Hi All
Has anyone else broken a rear shock on their I8 ?
Mine broke last week (and I do mean snapped ) when i had to swerve to avoid having a piece of steel roofing come through my windscreen, very inopportune moment to have a suspension failure. took the car to service and they have another one sitting in there waiting on parts to arrive with the same problem. say they've seen it before a few times

Sounds worrying, any pictures of where it failed? Would be worth people visually checking for any signs of problems...

No problems previously, has pulled the shock out of the strut.
Dealers here have seen many failures on rear shocks form bad roads here but not seen this before.

Just changed the rear right shock absorber 3 days ago, it snapped. The car has driven 80 000km.
The protection seal on every shock absorber was defect, so changed all of these .

Funny my rear linkage broke 3-4 weeks ago at 8000 miles, I didn't even hit anything. It wasn't the shock definitely but it wasn't really caused by impact.

I posted about this. There's a technical service bulletin on this issue and BMW will replace both rear struts for FREE. It happened to my car.

I wasn't aware of that recall and am about to get my service done at Laurel. Will definitely check it out. Are you planning on an extended warranty after the original one expires?

extended warranty is stupid. they only offer up to 2 years or 75k miles. who the hell drives an i8 that much! no other products available under 75k miles. i'm certainly not going to pay for it

BMW sucks most of the time.

I looked at a few places. They quoted me somewhere around $5000 for one more year and $9900 for two years which i think is ridiculous.

Yeah it was like 8500 for two years / up to 75k miles. Just stupid. It's dumb things like this that makes me dislike the brand but I still somehow like the i8 so no wonder it's a love/hate relationship

Do you know the service bulletin. Both of mine snapped after hitting a pothole a year or so back, they made me pay to replace both of them, about 4k out of pocket. Said it was due to driving and not parts.

Also happened to mine. 2016 with 11900 miles on it. Drivers rear was completely blown out. They replaced both rear shocks no charge.

And I have to say the dealer here is totally awesome!

it is NOT a recall, unfortunately

People on the forum are mistaking this TSB for a recall. This is NOT a recall. I am not saying you said it was a recall, but it is only covered if your car is still under warranty.

2014 i8, 2000 miles, driving on some basic, somewhat uneven concrete pavement on highway, then KLUNK!!!! and klunkety clunk, constantly after that.

Before I took it to BMW I had a local shop who had just removed the rear bumper, help me locate the noise. The driver's rear sock was floppy and leaking its oil.

Took to BMW based on this post--thinking it would be covered out of warranty. Not a recall. its just a TSB, which means, they know what the root cause is and how to fix it, IF the car is still covered. If not, you pay.

otherwise, in my case, $4800 quote. Robbery. I bought pair online for $650 each (not $890) from Atlanta BMW online and am going to do it myself.

This seems to be a recall issue really... my 2016 only 39k miles has this same issue. Also there is an upper shock mount that is also broken...

Is this an issue on later (2019-20) models as well? Or is it one of the aspects of the suspension modifications?

Between my 2016 ad 2016 the rubber dust cover to protect the rear shocks is the same. The rear shocks goes bad because the dust cover develops cracks and debris gets inside the seal of the shock causing them to fail.

So I finally got my shocks replaced did the repair myself. There looks to be a imprint of a screwdriver head on the bottom of the peice that secures the seal. Like it was hit and loosened. The really sus part was bmw recommended replacing them I refused as the shocks looked fine and Were working perfectly before it was in for service. When I got it back it was riding different. They both failed within 500 miles of that service.
