Looking at that second pic going down I can understand more why houses suddenly blow up without warning with fatalities.

I feel you.

Today's fun is a break in our water supply line, the main. Losing roughly 75-100 gpm. Production shut down for 4 hours.....and possibly 4 days.

How often are elevators checked for safety? I'm always surprised there aren't more 'free falls' of broken elevators in office buildings

In these parts, they are licensed and inspected annually by municipalities. The certificate is usually located in each elevator car.

Free fall hasn't been a huge problem in over 100 years, as there are safety systems to prevent it in the event of a catastrophic failure.....

It's called "overspeed governor". If elevator car reaches the preset speed it will trip and lock the car on the T-rail (cab guide). I dealt with similar devices for about 2 years.
