Drivetrain: Only electric drive possible

If you've been following, I've been having much fun with my i3.

The latest problem is with the REX:

The first time this happened, I pulled the code in ISTA-D and came out to be a cooling issue. Clearing the code and running the REX again brings the fault back. Dealer eventually replaces the thermostat.

On the same day I pickup the car, I run into the fault again after running the REX for about 20 highway miles. This time, I pull the code and get 115007 "Coolant temperature sensor, signal: too high" with a engine temp about 111C.

Has anyone run into this problem before? I cant imagine it's because of HOLD mode, since a single tank is good for at least 60 miles.

I think so too. Just coded out HOLD mode, cleared the fault, and ran it down to 5% SOC. Fault came back like clockwork. I touched the coolant bottle in the front and while it was warm, it wasnt extremely hot.

Did they even test the damn system after the first fix....

Sounds like you got a lemon, that sucks.

We have used the Rex on our 2017 a lot, has to be at least 5-6k miles out of 18k and have had no problems with the Rex.

No kidding. I've had the car for 190 days and it's been in the shop for 104...and counting.

That said, I'm driving a 530e loaner right now and paying next to nothing for this lease, so I cant complain much.

Yeah 530e is nice if you don't mind the fuel cost. I was in one for awhile when my old i3 had that recall. I'd wait until you get the car back to maximize your time in the 530e, then call BMWNA and ask for a lemon buyback plus some months of payments returned.

I already went through the Lemon Law review process, but BMW gave me a very attractive offer to keep the car. That said, I'm returning this thing after the lease. I also have the option to have it bought back at any time.

Apparently I'm getting a new REX engine now.

Finally got the car back!

Complete engine replacement done. Service notes say sand/silica was found in the cooling system and it probably came from casting of the engine block. Ran the REX for about an hour and 70 miles, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
