just to add. I bought a little telescope last summer and sometimes look at different stars.
I noticed many stars are pinpoint, maybe a little reddish or blueish or white or even pulsing -but I never detected pulsing. Conversely some stars never focused into a tight spot - I thought my focuser wasn't exact enough - turns out the reason they are never tight spots is because they are classified double-stars. And like with the conjunction the are two objects close together. But unlike planets that orbit sun due to gravity the double-stars are always in their tandem position. |

just a tip, binoculars for star/planet gazing don't need much magnification they need large(er) aperture size. Though with these bright planets the magnification may excel. I'm curious if with the conjunction Jupiters moons are easily apparent.

Some shots from my Sony DSC-RX10 IV.
Full image, crop showing Jupiter's moons, and our moon.

That is AWESOME with the moons of Jupiter shows as well. How cool is that!? we were just out looking at it with the naked eye about an hour ago and it was cool but thanks for the shots you provided.

I'm not kidding. Just when Siri was coming out, I was looking at the planets and we couldn't figure out what planet we were looking at. My brother said it was Uranus. I said not, you can't see Uranus without a telescope. So, I asked Siri to settle the dispute. I said, " Siri, can you see Uranus with the naked eye?" Siri replied, "sygazelle, I don't know you well enough to answer that question!" The funny thing is...I was asking the question seriously. BTW, no you cannot see Uranus with the naked eye.

Sucks I sold my telescope! Never saw saturn with it but did see jupiter one time. You could see some moons and could barely make out the stripe pattern on it. It was pretty cool.

My co worker in the office beside me was going on about this today. He's taken up astronomy as a hobby. Had his telescope all ready last night.
We've had overcast skies for days now and I could feel his frustration. I told him he should have just hopped in his car and drove until the skies cleared. |

I've been watching them get closer and closer each night. Pointing them out to my wife if we were driving somewhere and they were still up. I had every hope last night that 2020 would have something good in store for us, faithful or otherwise.
AND I watched 2 episodes of Mandalorian and completely forgot about the real life stars |

I looked three times and didn't see it. According to the Sky Guide app, it was supposed to be most visible at 5:05pm CST but the tree line was in the way. No luck the next two hours with camera, telephoto and tripod prepared.

We saw it Sunday evening. Good stuff!
My wife and I have been enjoying seeing Saturn and Jupiter, and Mars in the southeast, during our evening walks. Jupiter and Saturn are going below the horizon now and Mars is pretty high overhead/to the south. Venus is visible now in the east just before sunrise. All comments above relative to the northern hemisphere. edit: Just looked at it at 6:30pm Eastern US time with 8x binoculars. Both planets clearly visible and the Galilean moons of Jupiter just visible. Cool stuff! Last edited by chassis; 12-22-2020 at 07:52 PM.. |
